There's no benefit unless you want more cores. I am still rolling with 12th gen. Prices of these cpu's haven't really come down at all and with the degradation fiasco it seems sticking with it is even better choice.

It uses the same amount of power as the 4060 while delivering less performance. That is impressive.

This is especially crazy when you consider you could pick up 4060s last year for like $270 (which is what I did for my living room PC). Hell, I think 5060s are hovering near that price point if you look hard enough. You basically save 20-30 dollars and get astronomically worse performance.

Pretty much any AM5 CPU is overkill for a modern gaming setup and will work well with a 5060 TI 16GB. A 7700X/9700X will give you eight cores without fully breaking the bank (some upcoming games like Sloplands 4 want 8 cores for some reason) but you'd probably be fine with a 7600X/9600X.

You can also get an X3D chip but tbh the couple hundred extra dollars you'd spend on an X3D AM5 chip would be better spent on a better GPU.

Are you going to play some obscure game based on 30 year old Russian codebase? DCS Then 7800X3D/9800X3D is the best choice.

It's a good low-midrange GPU for this gen. My point is more that you'll see a lot of people recommend X3D CPUs online but you get more value out of getting a non-X3D CPU and spending the money you save on a better GPU.

A 9700X is like $280 and a 9800X3D is around $480. That's 200 dollars for a somewhat middling performance jump in most games. Meanwhile, an RTX 5070 or RX 9070 (non-XT) are roughly $50-$150 more than 5060 Ti 16GB and move you up an entire tier in performance.

basically, budget around a lower-end CPU and see what the best GPU you can get is.

Last major card gen that used 3.0 was the RTX 2000 series if i recall. It is thoroughly outdated.

Yeah a PCIe 4.0 x8 device goes to PCIe 3.0 x8 when you stick it in an x8 or x16 slot. It doesn't magically become PCIe 3.0 x16.

This is one of the reasons that the 6500 XT was so hated, it's PCIe 4.0 x4.

5070, 5070 Ti, 9070, 9070 XT. The categorizations are all a little bit skewed nowadays though. And 'good' mostly depends on what prices are on a given day as they fluctuate so much.

Keep in mind that even a 5060 Ti 16 GB is going to handily outperform a PS5 Pro so you'll be set for this gen if you do pick one up.

I think, depending on how Windows automatically sets up multi low and high power GPUs, that he is actually using the 5090 for games despite the fuck up. If you go into "Settings > Display > Graphics" and have an iGPU and dGPU, you'll see that Windows automatically assigns apps to a specific one. This is true for desktops too. There's a slight performance penalty playing games like this versus just plugging the monitor directly into the main GPU.

If his monitor is only HDMI 2.1, he's limited to just 188 fps at 4K, which is basically unplayable in modern games.
