Why? San Andreas has been milked countless times since its original sixth gen release. Who would buy a VR headset to play SA when there are dozens of ways to play it?
I think you're over estimating how much I actually care. I have very little interest in VR, but SA always holds a special place in my heart. If you ever sunk over a thousand hours playing San Andreas Multiplayer, you'd get it.

GTA 6 better have a damn good extreme metal radio station seeing that we are back in Florida, one filled with the good shit from the 90s, maybe another one for more nwobhm, speed meyal and thrash bands from the 80s. I even made 2 concept playlists in Spotify. Last thing I want to hear is Matt Heaf talk about Jinjer, Spiritbox or any other shit. Just get Justin Horval on the booth and we are gold.

The GTA IV metal radio station was fine but the lack of proper NYDM like Suffocation, Incantation, Immolation, and Mortician (hell, add in Profanatica/Havohej while were at it) was just sad.

I would love a "house" genre radio station.

GTA 6 will tank (relative to the size of the franchise) and i'm tired of people thinking it won't.

But even then, if it is successful enough I think it will make the gaming industry even more unstable, especially with Sony. Imagine a Last of Us game with 2 billion on the line, one unlucky launch and entire treasuries of third world countries go up in flames.

The insane budget and 6 year average development timeframe is just completely fucked. Nuke it all from orbit and reset to 2 year average with a team of dozens max and we can start getting back to reality. You would probably see 30x as many "high end" games.

The only game that will take the industry down with it is GTA6. It is the king of mega budgets and selling gajillion dollars. If it doesn't meet expectations, that will have serious repercussions on the entire industry.
Curious, how would GTA 6's gigantic budget be problematic for the gaming industry as a whole? I could R* themselves taking a hit. Maybe they'll try to overcompensate with microtransactions unlike anything we've seen before in a large quantity. Would other companies be wary of allocating larger budgets for their titles because GTA VI did not meet sales expectations? What's sad is that it's not enough for a game to be renowned by critics and fans, it has to make ALL the money or be a soapbox for political purposes.

Rockstar are the ones that inspired the industry to go into the "put a gorillion dollars into budget, make back gorillion times 10". GTA was the most expensive game ever made at the time of its release and GTA5 broke CoD Black Op's "$1 billion after 15 days" by doing it in 3 days. RDR2 was a much larger budget but was a lesser known IP and it still had the second-highest grossing entertainment launch in history, behind GTA5.

If GTA6 doesn't beat GTA5's launch record, it may cause some investors to panic and sell a bunch of their stock in various other companies. The "leader" not doing well causes doubts within the industry as a whole and a lot of the gaming industry is not in a healthy position at the moment. It may be the eventual awakening to a lot of companies that the "infinite budget" development design is not inherently better and is actually incredibly risky. Sony are relying on GTA6 to be a console seller to redeem the PS5's poor sales and if it doesn't cause the PS5 to pull ahead of the PS4's lifecycle numbers, that could be a huge problem for Sony.

GTA 5's launch achievements were lightning in a bottle. Right place, right time. Ample PS3s and 360s out in consumers' home, no major GTA in five years at that point in time, and that was BEFORE GTA Online. If anything, that should tell R* that people are still interested in single player stories, not just online multiplayer. Of course, they abandoned RDO despite RDRII being the second highest grossed entertainment product as you said.

I'd like the gaming industry to scale back for smaller, experimental projects to give breathing room for themselves and consumers alike. Only video game that reminds me of that is Half-Life 3. Too much hype surrounding it, Valve switching from a developer to a platform holder, first person shooters evolving since Half-Life 2. GTA 6 may be the next Half-Life 3 in reverse. Time will tell.

@Edgy But Dull covered one side. The other side is that Sony, and to a lesser extent Microsoft, are relying on GTA to move consoles as the PS5 is lagging behind the PS4 with no signs of catching up or continuing on a healthy incline of sales. The sony fans will quote "launch aligned" and "on par with PS4 because of X reasons" It's cope. Four years in to a generation and the console is more expensive than launch, pricing out normies who would be buying the console at this point in the cycle.

GTA 6 is meant to be the gaming phenomena that sells the PS5 and PS5Pro if it flops, Sony are in trouble. They have little on the cards in way of sales and with the lack of 30% revenue from GTA6 online, the extra PSN subs and the lack of console sales, Sony would be in for a hard time.

The crash of 83 was caused by shitty, over-priced games released on to an increasingly jaded audience. One game broke the camels back; ET. Nearly 40 years later, we're witnessing a repeat of circumstances with the only console manufacturer safe from a crash; Nintendo, been the same company that survived the last crash.

In that case, maybe R* will just release GTA6's online mode one to one with the single player to recoup costs.

its going to become necessary for Developers to scale back development to 6th/7th gen budgets very soon, even if the games have worse Graphics most of the consumer base isn't going to care, Fortnite and Roblox for example are extremely popular in spite of their low graphical fidelity, your going to see smaller budget titles even if CEOs go down crying and screaming about it. I have no doubt GTA 6 will be successful, but regardless its going to have to happen and im ok with that

It's not that simple. Every gamer who moves from GTA5 online to GTA6 HAS TO pay into GTA6 at least the same amount as they did/will as GTA5. If those players move over and spend less, that's a net negative for R*

Not only that, R* are stuck between a rock and a hard place; Do they force GTA5 online players over and force them to start from scratch, or do they offer them a few million to entice them over, thereby screwing over everyone who is new to the game and starting from scratch?

On top of that, the barrier for entry is higher, with fewer customers. There are only 48 million PSN, and 25 million XBL MAUs, that includes those just logging in to get their free games.
88 million people may buy the game, but a maximum of 75 million have online accounts to access GTA6 online.
If they close GTA5 online, which they will have to at some point, 100 million people will be pissed off.
its going to become necessary for Developers to scale back development to 6th/7th gen budgets very soon
The best part is, they'll have no choice in the matter. Nintendo has just thrashed Microsoft, Sony, Ea, Ubislop, Activision and soon, R*, by focusing on exclusives aimed at affordable, low-powered hardware, something consoles used to be synonymous with and what was their main strength.

Sony and Microsoft have to release consoles with lower specs at worst, on par at best, with the XSX/PS5 if they hope to claw back their user base next gen. But they won't.

It's going to be a bloodbath over the next few years. If an economic downturn comes, then the industry, outside of Nintendo studios, will be a wasteland.

I for one welcome our sandal-wearing goldfish-tending overlords.

Fortnite and Roblox for example are extremely popular in spite of their low graphical fidelity, your going to see smaller budget titles even if CEOs go down crying and screaming about it.
They're also free-to-play, so their revenue comes from microtransactions. GTA6 will be a premium product and top of an extensive online mode.

Proud to say that after all of my years out of high school, I finally managed to get both Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories for the PS2 and they’re coming in the mail for me next week.

I’ll be spending the rest of my weeks playing both of them, even if I have them both for the PSP. It’ll be just like I was a teenager all over again.

GTA in Tokyo was pitched to be a release after GTA III. Sam Houser even did some recon work while in Japan to promote GTA 3. Ultimately, it was easier to reuse the cities from GTA 1 since R* did not understand Japanese culture enough to satirize it.

I think it was a good call. I cannot see Tokyo working as a GTA game itself in the series. The streets in Japan are too narrow.

We already have Sleeping Dogs. Sure, it's Hong Kong but we can at least imagine what it would look like using it as a base of reference.
I'm glad we got Vice City and San Andreas instead. The former is one of my favorite games of all time and I infinitely prefer it's colorful and unique setting over yet another game set in Tokyo.

Speaking of Japan, Time Extension released an interesting piece on GTA3's Japanese release.

Cool trailer.

So, they had to find a publisher within Japan to release games overseas. Capcom being a big enough name there for Rockstar to consider. Also, CERO did not exist until 2003 for rating games. Before, each console manufacturer had say on how a game gets classified with a rating.

This mission was both amusing and annoying at the same time. I failed this approximately six times (three on PS2 and three on PSP) because the gameplay mechanics on driving the forklift was almost janky to me.

Though, seeing Phil yell out “DADDY!” three times in the making of this was worth it.

VCS had some really annoying missions. Tune In, Tune Out, Bug Out was one of them because of the high wanted level and very minuscule payout.

The last time I played that mission, I scrubbed save states. Between the controls, camera, and time limit, that mission can go fuck itself.
