Half Life Alyx and Boneworks - The two VR games that dare to be different. Okay maybe just one, but still. AKA Floop’s shill thread.

Is VR the big gay?

Well that’s irrelevant anyway because no one owns an audio book version of spider verse or a black berry version of fruit ninja because those don’t exist. It’s a fucking joke made to be absurd and you’re over thinking it and not focusing on the point.
The point being that apparently VR and normal games are completely separate, which isn't true at all. Just make a joke about how "you guys apparently want a reverse Skyrim VR", that would be a good, actually relevant point.

I'm just glad that someone made a FPS that isn't tied to multiplayer or esports bullshit.

I used to routinely play FPS games because they had robust single player campaigns.
Oh my god yes. Imagine if HLA was a free to play multiplayer shooter instead.
That being said, I really hope someone mods the engine to make Garry’s Mod 2. I’m getting hard just thinking about it.

I sincerly doubt this will happen because a great VR game would generally make for a lousy conventional game, and vice versa.

What VR shines in is small details, whether that's pulling an important item off a bookshelf or just tossing a Grenade where you wanted it to land. When it works you get a similar satisfaction you'd get if you were doing sports.

When you watch the trailer it's quite clear it's being designed around VR, Alyx is taking cover as opposed to strafing around enemy fire. You're grabbing bullets off a bookshelf to reload your gun. You're physically reloading your weapon. All this stuff wouldn't be interesting at all on a Monitor and Keyboard. They'd be automated by action keys or straight up automatic. It's only exciting in VR where you physically replicate the actions.

Honestly current gen VR hardware kinda sucks, the headsets are too low res so you get the infamous "screendoor effect" and nothing is worse than stepping on a cable and killing your fun right in the moment.

But I don't think it's a meme because physically shooting targets even in the current rough state is very amusing, and when VR magic works it will induce a feeling of awe.

I think Valve and their people definitely agree with me, otherwise they would not be competing with Facebook over this niche market. I think Half-Life Alyx is being made as the defacto Killer App of VR, the one everyone gets when they first install their VR hardware. So it's a long term investment. I do think that within the near future a good VR Headset and Controller will only cost $400 or less as they improve manufacturing. Oculus Quest is already hitting that pricerange.
Absolutely this. Valve isn’t expecting for this game to be a massive financial success, I’m sure they’re fully aware of the fact that being a VR game, it will have limited appeal and way lower sales. Right now, VR gets a bad rep for not having any “real” games, just barebones tech demos. Pretty sure Valve’s real motivation here is to give people who are on the edge a good reason to buy a VR headset, and to show other devs that it’s possible to make a full-length VR game.

Valve might make a profit by including a free copy of the game with the index headset and controllers. That’s really fucking good marketing right there.

Dang, maybe if this encourages other devs to improve their VR games and progress the medium I might actually bother getting VR.

I always wanted to take a peek into the practically cult like communities on VR chat as well.

VR chat is a shitshow, and I love it. Even when it crashes my computer because of a million particles being rendered from one jackass.

Finally changed the thread title

You can't port a VR game to traditional controls for the same reason you can't port a Kinect game or a balance board game to any other standard controller scheme. The game would suck because they are all bad.

Without the gimmick, everyone would realise that immediately. Just like the reload discussion that happened in this thread, it's a boring gimmick. In a game, I want to kill enemies, and not spend 20 seconds reloading.

I do this shit in real life if I wanted to.
I'd argue with you on the idea that they're all bad but definite agree on the impossibility of porting.

When you're in the VR zone, doing like 5 separate actions to reload your gun doesn't amount to much. But to translate it out of VR you'd have to do something like "hit the 'mag release' button, wait for the animation, hit the 'grab new mag' button, wait for the animation, hit the 'insert new mag' button, wait for the animation, press the 'rack slide' button, wait for the animation, begin aiming," in VR you are the animation, and learning how to do it faster and more efficiently is just another skill curve.

So, basically turns into 3D QWOP? Now I REALLY want a M+KB port

Like Totally Accurate Battlegrounds mixed with Receiver.

That actually does sound fun, Valve pls make.
Edit:
That's really the main issue is there's absolutely nothing else VR that I feel like I just gotta have, at least on PC.

If the PC versions of RE7 and Ace Combat 7 had VR, as well as if that VR From game was on PC, then it would be more tempting, but as it is now I just can't justify the high cost of VR for just one game and don't get me wrong, I really want to play this.
I'd recommend Blade & Sorcery and Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades if you haven't seen those already. B&S is a simple arena fighter (for now, and mods are rapidly changing that) but still pretty fun, and H3 has a lot of fun little gamemodes. Both are still early access and a little bit janky so it still doesn't exactly make the $400-1000 any more sensible but I've put a few dozen hours into each so the price per hour of entertainment isn't bad.

The more people I convince to waste hundreds of dollars on this fad, the better I feel about my own foolish purchase. Don't delay, buy today.

I just noticed the hearts on one of the gloves. That’s a really clever way of displaying health. I feel like we’ve all forgotten how awesome this company is. Look at all those details on the gloves. They’re held together by fucking plastic cable ties.

I wish they still updated TABG. That game was unironically tight as hell.

I think this is obnoxious. Cost is always a factor, and Valve knows it. Dota 2 us aimed at anyone that normally can't afford shit, but VR is more than just "the tools the cheapskates can't use" because it's more expensive than a modern console to get the parts necessary to run VR and then all the VR parts. Most people won't be able to play this game. Of course, that's the point. To draw people into getting VR with a once-dead franchise to get more interest in it. Of course there will be complaints, but mocking people from your gold-plated 'tard helmet is still shitty. Any complaints about VR are still valid. Like a scientific paper, the criticisms are needed to grow in the first place. I know the controls are made for VR. I'm not saying it should be K+M, but it's just ridiculous to dismiss people like that. VR can't get better without criticism, and I DO want to see it get better. If they want to see VR really explode, they're going to have to figure out how to deal with cost. Whoever does that first gets the gold rush.

VR only? That's gonna limit the initial audience. Granted it also might be the thing that gives VR a boot in the ass. Remember when all smartphones cost a fuckload of money? Now you can get them for $20. Maybe this is the first step towards VR going the same direction. $50 for a decent VR headset instead of several hundred dollars.

Some big box electronics stores that stock them might let you try them out, otherwise you could either pester an IRL friend that has a headset already or see if you have a VR arcade nearby and either pay for time or see if you can work something out with them.

I was never able to play 3DS 3D, always fucked with my eyes something awful, but VR has been surprisingly alright, even in fairly intense games and with a slightly potato PC.

Randy Bitchford is a faggot.

I'm looking at the chips and boards on the gloves and they're just graphics cards components.

The wiring is all off and the transistors and capacitors are too small to power anything significant.

They're probably whatever Kleiner or whoever could cobble together out of whatever was left in the ruins of Black Mesa.
