I'm happy Half-Life is making a return, but I don't know how I feel about the whole VR thing. I don't think buying a VR setup just for one game is a justifiable purchase in my eyes. Hopefully if this game does well it'll persuade Valve to make a proper PC/console continuation to HL2: E2.
 
Also eternal reminder there's no guarantee the actual game is remotely what it looks like now on release. Bullshots and pre-rendered stuff didn't vanish this year.

They had an old ideology when room scale VR was first being developed that you should never move the player when they weren’t moving. Yeah that didn’t age well.

The thing that seemed off to me was they tried super hard to squeeze in detail about picking up ammunition and loading it into the pistol...and in the other scene they just gravity gun-hands the pistol into their grip. That just tells me the VR interaction may not be as hot as the trailer would have you believe, and may be more like having you putting your hands in certain places like some sensor bar shit.

But this is Valve, and they brought an impressive physics engine to HL2. I'm not expecting much on the interactions themselves, but if they can make objects move convincingly in a virtual space based on physical input that would already be groundbreaking.
 
I sincerly doubt this will happen because a great VR game would generally make for a lousy conventional game, and vice versa.

What VR shines in is small details, whether that's pulling an important item off a bookshelf or just tossing a Grenade where you wanted it to land. When it works you get a similar satisfaction you'd get if you were doing sports.

When you watch the trailer it's quite clear it's being designed around VR, Alyx is taking cover as opposed to strafing around enemy fire. You're grabbing bullets off a bookshelf to reload your gun. You're physically reloading your weapon. All this stuff wouldn't be interesting at all on a Monitor and Keyboard. They'd be automated by action keys or straight up automatic. It's only exciting in VR where you physically replicate the actions.

Honestly current gen VR hardware kinda sucks, the headsets are too low res so you get the infamous "screendoor effect" and nothing is worse than stepping on a cable and killing your fun right in the moment.

But I don't think it's a meme because physically shooting targets even in the current rough state is very amusing, and when VR magic works it will induce a feeling of awe.

I think Valve and their people definitely agree with me, otherwise they would not be competing with Facebook over this niche market. I think Half-Life Alyx is being made as the defacto Killer App of VR, the one everyone gets when they first install their VR hardware. So it's a long term investment. I do think that within the near future a good VR Headset and Controller will only cost $400 or less as they improve manufacturing. Oculus Quest is already hitting that pricerange.

$400 or less is what the price range will have to be to get me on board.

This is future technology, transistors might not even exist there.

Apparently you can't even move around normally yet which suggests any attempts to have normal walking around type motion is a last minute kludge.

Screendoor effect is when you're able to see the spaces between the pixels (giving the appearance of looking through a screen door) because the screen resolution is too low/the lenses zoom you in too close. Was really bad on the old Oculus dev kits but I don't notice it too often on my consumer Rift or WMR headset (1080x1200 per eye and 1440x1440 per eye respectively)

for sub-$400 you can pretty much get anything but the index, the HTC and Oculus headsets drop that low on sale (or used if you're down with that) and the WMR headsets are pretty much constantly there. They've each got their own advantages and disadvantages (Vive wands are shit but it's plug and play with Knuckles, Oculus has its home app that eats performance, WMR tracking is often garbage) so any recommendations really depend on what kind of sale is on at the time.

Edit: Half Life 2 is supposed to take place roughly 20 years later, so 2018-2020ish? Because I'm fairly certain 1 was supposed to take place in 98.

Half Life 2 is set in 202X while the Black Mesa incident is sometime in 200X, probably earlier in the decade

Edit: Here's an in universe letter to Gordon from the HL1 manual confirming 200X

Screendoor Effect is when you see the dark between pixels because your eyes are so close to two monitors. It happens mainly to me when my eyes try to focus and read something in VR, my virtual reality image starts to look like I'm staring at the image through a mesh screen door. This should be fully eliminated when the next gen of headsets come in the near future.
