17 years of buildup is a lot to live up to. Expectations are so high for HL3 that it'll have a hard time living up to them.

Honestly, I think its the other way around, we just want Valve to conclude the story they started and made us get invested in. We do not require them to revolutionize gaming again (assuming thats even possible anymore).

Now, of course, we would welcome if it was a SATISFYING conclusion...no need for citizen cane, just something that made it all worth it.

I just want it to conclude/continue the story and have amazing physics like Alyx which had things like liquid that moves inside the bottle as you rotate it around. I'm a huge sucker for cool physics in games, whether it's half-life 2, alyx, tears of the kingdom or exanima. The list doesn't really go on that much which is a shame because for me that stuff advancing and evolving feels way more next gen than 8k tectures, largely poorly implemented ray tracing and 144 fps. All the while games increasingly needing to rely on dlss and such to even get somewhat decent frame rates.

Very much possible, Valve just has to make a game like everyone used to mere 8 years ago, harnessing the available computational power without wasting it's potential to deliver the best visual fidelity. HLX on Source 2 will decimate Timmy Swiney's Unreal 5hite and make Mr. Leather Jacket green from nVy once it proves that the more you buy, the LESS you save.

Funny how a teaser like this would be #1 internet front-page news back in the day. The series has been left on the cliffhanger for so long that even the memes about how long it's been are completely dead and gone. Maybe that was their 500 IQ plan all along: Leave it so long that the insane desperation and hype for HL3 (which could never be lived up to) gives way to people sort of deciding "It'll be cool if it ever comes out in my lifetime, I guess". People are probably simply too old to be so hyped and engaged anymore tbh, the average OG Half Life fan is probably closer to retirement than adolescence lol.

Timestamped to interesting speculation.
This leads me to believe that Valve has set up an ARG for HLX. As in, a proper ARG like the ones they did for Portal 2, TF2's MvM and Pyromania updates. It's been a while since the Internet has seen a proper ARG, and I really hope someone at Valve has decided to lay one out to hype up HLX, with Mike's tweet being the starting point. I remember following the TF2 ARG's as they unveiled and how fun it was watching everyone put the pieces of the puzzle together, nowadays it's a lost art and I hope that Valve will remind people what ARG actually means.

It wouldn't be surprising if its nothing hl3 related and another spinoff title like alyx, it seems to be the very likely out of the two anyway with all the leaks about a multiplayer game in the works people mentioned a while ago, and nah i don't mean deadlock.

Valve will never release Half-Life 3. As in, they will never release a Half-Life game by that title. Beat that name out of your mind already.

Do a little mental exercise: what do you expect from a game with that exact title? What technical revolutions do you expect to see? What graphics do you expect to see? What level of imperfection would you be willing to accept? What story do you want to see? Whatever it is that you've conjured in your mind around this title, Half-Life 3, do you really expect that it's something that Valve will ever release? And most importantly: do you think that by calling HLX "Half-Life 3", you're not holding it to the standards of that conjuration? Because you do, subconsciously you do, and that way you're setting yourself up for disappointment. And if you keep holding every new Half-Life installment to that standard, you'll burn your interest towards the series out, and by extent, Valve will lose interest in keeping the series alive if nothing they release lives up to fan expectations.

Just let go of that name, leave it be, it died 17 years ago. Instead, be happy that we're getting a new Half-Life game, and expect just that, a new Half-Life game. Not Half-Life 3. The sooner this name is laid to rest the better for Half-Life as a whole. There have been enough examples in history how expectations around a brand name that people held were the bane of new products that were otherwise fairly decent, just because they didn't live up to the predecessor's name. Learn from them and forget about that name.

I think at certain point it stops mattering. Like I don't think anyone has seriously expected a HL3 for years now at this point, so if it would just show up and be a good game I think people would like it. It's not like any expectations have really built up, we just want a damn conclusion to the story. Like I don't think anyone but absolute retards would think that it was seriously in development for 17 years straight and expect some type of super game.
