Actually it is. A lot of them, maybe even most, are ghost towns, literal deserts filled with empty storefronts, street people, schizos, etc. where people get mugged or worse in the bathrooms or even in the open areas, the food courts are disasters with open drug dealing, lots of cell phone kiosks where you just know they specialize in selling burners, etc.Is it really that shocking for Americans to see functioning and active shopping malls? They're everywhere in Europe and thriving with business.
That said I recently (for the first time in years) went to a mall that was really nice. A certain demographic was entirely absent.
