Nika Holbert's mother: "This should have never happened."​

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Saturday morning, Metro Police Chief John Drake took questions from reporters, following a fatal shootout involving one of his officers.

Nika Holbert died from her injuries Friday, after Holbert and Officer Josh Baker exchanged gun fire in a Dollar General parking lot on Brick Church Pike.

"I’ve reviewed the body cam footage, he appeared to do everything he could to try to de-escalate the situation, including the use of taser, including trying not to use his firearm," said Chief Drake.

The morning of the shooting, Officer Baker pulled over a black Chevy Camaro after running the plates through their system and seeing that the owner of the car, Demond Buchanan, had six outstanding drug warrants. Baker quickly realized the owner wasn't behind the wheel.

Instead, it was Nika Holbert. Body camera footage released by MNPD showed Officer Baker found drugs in the car, radioed for backup and attempted to take Holbert into custody. That's when everything escalated.

"Here do me a favor and turn around," said Baker.

"No don’t put me in handcuffs I haven’t done anything wrong," replied Holbert as she ran away from the officer.

The video shows Baker warned Holbert that she was about to be tazed. When she retreats back into the car, he deploys the taser. Then you can see Holbert reach for something with her right hand. Baker believes it's a gun. "Ma’am, put the gun down, put the gun down," Baker screamed.

Holbert and the officer then exchange gunfire. Metro Police say Baker was shot once, Holbert was shot twice. She then attempted to get away, only to drive the Camaro into a ditch. Holbert later died from her injuries.

"There’s nothing else he could have done better other than maybe leave the scene and let her go away, and obviously, he couldn’t do that," surmised Chief John Drake.

Drake says Baker couldn't let her go, because he found her to be in possession of drugs and because she was driving without a Tennessee's drivers license.

Nika's Mother Responds

Nika Holbert's mother thinks it should never have gotten to this point. She called NewsChannel 5 wanting to share what she believes is her daughter's perspective on this story. She has asked us not to use her name in the interest of her own safety.

"There’s a thousand scenarios that could have happened to where both of them could have walked away. My daughter should be alive today," said Holbert's mother.

Nika's mother tells NewsChannel 5, she does not know the owner of the car her daughter was driving. "If I did, I would have him arrested already - yesterday. I don’t know that guy," she added.

She also said she wasn't surprised that Nika pulled out a handgun, saying she was quite obviously scared. “He was trying to kill her with that taser and she was trying to protect herself," she said.

Holbert's mother is now in the process of hiring an attorney and is considering her legal options.

Latest on Officer Baker's Condition

Chief John Drake visited a wounded Officer Josh Baker Saturday morning in his hospital room at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "He was in a little bit of pain still, understandably. His stomach had been -- he had a procedure done so he was a little groggy still," said Drake.

The 14 year veteran of the force could be released in the coming days.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations is still looking into the case, but it will ultimately be up to District Attorney General Glenn Funk, if any further legal action will be taken.

You know it's weird how damn hard it is to sue the government for anything else, but for some reason it seems incredibly easy to sue the police. Which I'm fine with, I'd just prefer it be that easy to sue anyone in government.

It's still an abused tool, the idea was to never use it too frequently, less the cops get tired of being sued for every ticket they write and quit, it's like spicing the food, there's a point where it goes from "enough" to "too much" without much inbetween, and I posit that we're kind there right now (too much) to the point that certain groups are actively suing the cops for every interaction in the hopes they give up on the notion of at least policing their group, if not everyone altogether.

Lawsuits have become so prolific these days that the idea behind them has been lost since everyone gets sued no matter what, and the bar for what counts as negligent and tortious has been pushed so low, the whole concept behind suing is lost, it's just a free payday with nobody having any incentive to build safer institutions or whatever if all that investment won't protect you from litigation, why spend it on improving your services/infrastructure when it's a literal better bet to use it to hire better lawyers for the inevitable settlements?

Why spend on community outreach programs and officer training when they'll be sued for "racist use of force" even IF they did all that the first time they have to twist an arm into a pair of handcuffs?

You get what you deserve when you see public servants as nothing but the conduit for you to get at the city's coffers, and then wonder why they treat you like shit.

You would find very few people in the US of any race who don't think there's a black "problem."

The roots of the problem, the scale of the problem, and the proposed solutions to the problem are what people don't agree on.

Not many people in the US think all blacks are stupid or prone to random chimpouts. Trying to get everyone to go full 1488 is not going to happen. Barack Obama is not up here throwing fists at random fast food workers when his chicken sandwich didn't come with extra mayo. Kamala might, but not Barack.

I think most SJWs are of the mind that the schools are bad, everyone is trying to keep the blacks down, and poverty breeds crime, so when a black kid gets caught with a joint he's going to get thrown into a gulag whereas a white kid would be released to the custody of his parents. The SJW mentality has it that the plight of blacks is a death by a thousand cuts, and the hand holding the knife is a white hand.

I think the problem is that maybe a third of blacks are coming out of the education system totally illiterate, angry, very poorly socialized, no job skills, no parenting skills, no self-discipline, and the main joy they find in life is having sex, committing crimes, and consoomer shit. They're behind literally every other group but they don't have the skills to assess how behind they are. These people will never fit into society in a useful manner.

I have come to this conclusion through a lifetime of being around blacks, reading good journalism about blacks, and careful consideration of what the issues are. And recognition that it's not 12/53, it's more like 3/53 and we can identify the 3 when they are born. I think the solution is a soft eugenics program where we offer free sterilization to prisoners and pay poor people of every race to not have kids. And while we're waiting for that to kick in, we take all the at-risk kids and put them in very small classes so they can't just wander through 13 years of education with nothing to show for it.

I don't know how to get SJWs to admit that the problem is not one that can be solved by an incremental approach. Or, dare I say, the New Age approach that is critical race theory, where if every white person meditates enough on the sins of their race, the black man will be free.

But if the country does become increasingly Mexican and Asian, they have no patience for that shit and they will turn hard right on a dime once the black problem becomes their problem.
