We can also see this through lolcow behavior as a whole or with the hyper autistic like you pointed out with Chris-chan where what they consume becomes a part of who they are. But the non-autistic incel crowd is the main one partaking in heavy handed tribalism because of those reasons of wanting to fit in. You can see it fitting the mold for either when they have nothing to lose and it means the world to them to cling onto self preservation. If they didn't need the validation that it brought them then they could easily see reason to want it to be better but the idea itself of criticizing it is a threat to killing the game and them in their mind.TL;DR to answer your question: That all culminates into an identity that feels more real than anything else they have going on IRL. Yes, it's exactly as pathetic as it sounds. That's why when you "criticize" a game, you actually criticize them. Their literal ego is tied up in a fucking toy. Gaming is their primary identity anchor, any threat to that identity feels existential. That's how you end up justifying ruining someone's life over making a good faith donation.
