I cannot pronounce the name of the Red Planet without going "MAAAARRSSUU". The original series was kinda meh, it had it's charm but the Ultimate version have so much good stuff that when you put them side by side it seems lacking. I'm speaking out of memory only watched the original once.

What's funny about the 2001 series, is that they actually had enough material right up to the massacre in the Rio hotel and introduction of Millennium. But, the guy they got as the director thought the source material sucked and wanted to go on his own path. Funny thing, the guy was also responsible for 2nd Season of Big O where the serious got pretentious and he was also behind Digimon Tamers...aaaand then wrecked his chances for a new season, when he decided to do an audio drama where he had the VA's for the characters "fight against the culture war".

I like how weirdly normal alucard looks in volume 1. He almost feels like a vanilla protagonist.
I think Hirano said in the artist notes in one of the books that he was told by his editor to make him look less like Vash The Stampede, so that's probably why he ended up getting crazier as the series went on.

Same thing happened with Araki and JoJo Part 1 being too similar to Fist Of The North Star.
I've only watched classic anime GITS, Berserk, etc. Is this actually worth a watch?
Both versions are worth watching imo, but you'll be retreading ground going into Ultimate because the first half of the OG Hellsing follows the same plot. My recommendation is listen to this song then watch Ultimate.

My only complaint is I wanted to see more of the world and the justification for using alucard as a weapon. Like we know there's more then just Nazis, with the wolfman. Did alucard fight Cthulhu and shit?

The TV series ironically scratches a little bit of that itch.

Well technically The Captain was the last of his kind, even Alucard claimed he was the only true vampire left. Incognito was always a weird thing, like he does egyptian magic and seems to imply he's an African vampire. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall any African vampire myths

I am an unapologetic fan of the Gonzo anime. I love its take on Seras and the way it depicts Alucard and Integra's relationship, also Helena was cool for a side character. Pleasantly surprised to see that it's been getting more positive reception these days.

Ultimate is good and all, but the original series has a certain charm to it that they couldn't replicate, janky animation be damned.

You mean how Seras is a one note whiny bitch and usesless? How Interga is also a huge megabitch that doesnt do nothing except yell at Alucard and others? How Helena is a walking exposition dump? An Im not surprised you have idiots going "oh, its not that bad guyz", its the same when we had hipsters and morons trying to claim EVA didnt suck.

It's the voice acting, aside from the OST it's the best. And Incognito is a fine villain. The final battle with him is cool too.

But yeah the anime that follows the actual bloody plot makes a lot more sense. Aside from Walter.

"The anime that follows the plot" clearly refers to Hellsing Ultimate.
Technically OVAs, cause when anyone says anime they think of the 13th ep one. Still, my apologise. Though, I dunno the Waltee stuff kinda makes sense.

Edit: Okay, what the fuck is this shit? I mean, besides TFS cock polishing.

Frankly if anybody wanted a half way decent Hellsing game lords of shadow 2 aint a bad choice

Pros: replicates the feeling of being an unstoppable killing machine that becomes progressively more powerful and unstoppable. Good level design and interesting plot. You eat people and Fight the devil

Cons: mandatory stealth sections. It makes sense early on ( you've just woken up a thousand years after being drained of blood and chaos space marines are after your ass) but it's pushed past the point of enjoyment. Also the final boss is decent but extremely short and underwhelming.

I like how the TV series plays up the horror and otherworldliness. It goes knee deep into the procedural aspects too, and I enjoyed the increased focus on hellsing's power and limitations. The biggest shock was seeing how good the animation looks in HD. It looks less cheap and more artistic when upscaled.

Frankly the whole product was good enough on its own that I wouldn't have minded a second season. Probably the only anime I can think of that actually pulled off an original conclusion when they didn't have any more creator material to work with.

I think if they were going to make a live action TV series about Hellsing, they 'd do better to base it on the anime TV series. Seras is the main character, it's all told from her point of view and she's a relatable fish out of water character who slowly uncovers the mystery of what's happening in the story. They also put the backstory of how Integra met Alucard in the middle of the series, where it feels like it's been properly built up to. I also like the idea of the series fleshing out the world and giving Alucard some normal enemies to fight, before throwing Nazis at him.

The TV series also had some underrated scenes, like where Seras watches Alucard kill a scumbag journalist, and where Integra is forced to atone for her own failures by executing those of her men who were turned into ghouls. Subtle horror like that feels like it has less of a place in Hellsing Ultimate.
