Hollow Knight - Dark Souls Metroidvania... with bugs!

I think it's in the feature creep cycle. Not having a hard date makes them think they have all the time in the world to keep adding stuff. I think they could release it today and it would be a perfectly fine game, the demos we have seen look sick and they have shown they know how to do proper gameplay with Hollow Knight (and this isn't a fucking Starfield scenario when none of the original developers are there). The devs are passionate autists, I do think they just want to make the best thing out there.

What they need is somebody to put a strict date on their head and to make them stop acting they don't have any urgency since they still have piles of Hollow Knight cash all over the place.
Nah, it's going to be shit. I've seen that movie way too much by now, the devs decided to focus on some retarded feature, likely one promoted by some discord tranny, and will sink the combat, platforming and exploration to cater to that feature. When (and if) the game releases, the feature will impress everyone until they realize it looks nice but doesn't fit the game, and will be shoehorned to basically every aspect of it.

Since if you squint hard enough it could be considered a related topic... Is Blasphemous 2 good to scratch the itch? Ended up passing on 1 when a buddy of mine filed it as "alright, but you aren't missing anything" and I'm wondering if 2 improved things enough to really look into.
Both Hollow Knight and Blasphemous don't really deliver on the Metroid part, they're effectively games with levels. I'm more partial to Blasphemous (but that might be because I platinumed it twice, whereas I'm still stuck on the moth in HK and can't even make the first jump in the Path of Pain). I think fighting in Blasphemous is more fun, it has parrying and focuses more on the sword, while Hollow Knight was designed around jumps and is too much about precise jumping/reach/positioning which I suck at and hate. The bosses in Blasphemous are less chaotic, more skill-based, very fair. It's more colorful, too.

HOWEVER:
Tragically, Blasphemous has been turned full-on soylib cuck woke and :neckbeard: in the last update; it's no longer properly blasphemous ("the pope is an evil coward"), just soy ("religion is baaaaaad mmkay"). I haven't played it after the update so I can't really say if the game still sorta holds up if you ignore Ending C ("c" stands for Cuck) and everything that leads to it. 2 is a sequel to Ending C so I suspect it is thoroughly soy.

And just to correct the record:
I shouldn't have to spend 10 minutes of platforming every time I need retry a boss fight
Neither HK nor Blasphemous restart at the boss like La-Mulana 2 does, but only one optional boss in Hollow Knight requires La-Mulana 1's 10 minutes of platforming, it literally sits on the checkpoint and is deliberately designed to be fucking annoying. HK has three boss-fighting modes where you can practice at leisure (but only after beating the originals).

You kinda fucked up one thing with the Nailsmith
Killing the Nailsmith affects nothing, is not a fuck-up in any sense, and grants an achievement. Leaving him alive grants another achievement.

I dunno, Hollow Knight is the most metroidy game I've played since the first time I played through Super Metroid with my cousin on his snes when I was a kid.
they're effectively games with levels.
Metroid and super metroid were effectively games with levels too. Metroid had norfair and brinstar and super metroid and brinstar, norfair maridia and the wrecked ship. You could sequence break but effectively, those areas were designed as and acted as levels complete with bosses at the end of each one.

Hollow Knight was a lot more open in the order you could complete its areas/levels in than either of those games. I found Hollow Knight to be more metroidy than most of the Castlevania games or most of the other metroidvanias I've played.

The world and exploration and progression is pretty much everything I liked and enjoyed about super metroid only expanded by like 10x.

OK, I'll bite, what feature are you talking about? I have seen the video, but no interviews. Is it Hornet's thread?

Also @Safir have you tried Blasphemous 2 or did you write off the series after ending cuck? As for "are they metrodivanias" I agree with @Grub , I found Hollow Knight very exploratory and very free form. When compared to Metroid Dread for example which is surprisingly "linear".

Why would the devs sacrifice everything to satisfy a single Discord tranny? All they have to do is stick to the formula. Unless if you witnessed it in their Shitcord yourself, I cannot believe you.
That being said, I really wish game devs would stop making Discord chatrooms. They just attract autists and troons with no life that will chat there 24/7 and fill the minds of the devs with trash.

Like I said, it's a pattern I've seen before. I hope it won't happen but it can handily explain the long ass wait better than arguments about how porting is hard. It might be randomly generated dungeons, it might be a new platforming mechanic, it might be making the gameplay more roguelike, but the end results will be a lot of wasted effort.

Like I said it's 8 platforms (8 versions of the game) on launch. Usually devs, especially indie devs, release ports for Switch, Linux, and Mac after the game has launched. They are probably optimizing all the versions of the game and ironing out bugs.

It might be randomly generated dungeons, it might be a new platforming mechanic, it might be making the gameplay more roguelike, but the end results will be a lot of wasted effort.
Any major features added this late into development would just be half-assed and broken. If it's the same team that brought us the refined 2017 title, then they have to be smarter than that.

Aww, it was a "trust me bro" thing... and here I was hoping I'd get some insider stories from some discord hellhole...

Anywho, give me the rainbows, but for now I'm still optimistic. My expectation is that they keep adding shit in the sense that they keep adding new screens/more parallax layers (as well as possibly the ports) and less that they are obsessed with jamming a square peg in a round hole. Definitely we won't know till it comes out (if it comes out).

But like I've said, it's dev time has gone way beyond "being excited about" is warranted, so best I can suggest is forget it even exists and revive the thread when it actually does come out (or talk more about base Hollow Knight).

Speaking of which, Mossbag (who must be going mad at making shit up to put out any sort of content, should definitely have branched out from Hollow Knight years ago) did put out this neat video about the Hollow Knight map.

When Psychonauts 2 was announced, I got a chance to talk to the devs about why the game was delayed and they told me that porting a game is basically making a new version of your game.
It can be, if the game isn't programmed in a portable way.

But if you go into the development cycle with portability in mind, it's not a massive effort for the developers. Modern platforms aren't all that different from one another, they're all PCs and smartphones with gimmicks. Especially so if you use a middleware engine that has done most of the heavy lifting on portability for you.

The hard and time-consuming part that comes with additional ports is quality assurance and testing. You do want to QA each platform separately, because despite 99% of the game working identically everywhere there will always be something that slips through the cracks and breaks something on one platform but not others. Plus, each console has its own certification process that takes time and effort to pass.
So I've seen a tweet about the game being ported to a different engine because of Unity's fuck ups. If true then that by itself is like a whole extra year
Pretty sure that's just memeing on Silksong never getting released. It'd be funny if they actually decide to toss Unity into the ditch and port... to a different engine.

They are so late into development that Unity becoming Jewish (probably) won't affect them. Worst case scenario it will delay the release date by another month or two.

So they release a myriad of trailers in multiple game shows. They announce a half-assed release date around summer time and then they delay that indefinitely. Then they maintain radio silence for the next 6 months after the delay and refuse to explain. It's starting to look like the game is in development hell.

The devs have no one else to blame but themselves for causing the fanbase to go apeshit every time Nintendo announces an indie direct. Like ffs, it shouldn't be that much of a problem for them to at least give a small update once in a while. But for whatever reason they need to keep everything a secret. At this point it dosen't matter how good or bad the game is, even the most patient of fans are going to be disappointed when it eventually drops. Too much hype has been build up for this game because the devs refuse to say anything.

I suspect the reason they refuse to say anything is because they barely have anything to show and have gone through so much scope creep that coming clean to their fanbase would be basically them admitting that the game in its current state is a huge mess and is nowhere near close to being released in a functional form. I've worked on enough projects to recognize the signs of a team trying to hide their incompetence.

On one hand that would suck if this is the outcome. I would genuinely hate it if the sequel ended up being shit. On the other hand it be funny seeing how badly the Redditors copes and seethes about it.

The indieshitter curse of if the first game was popular the sequel will never come out strikes again

I was thinking about Silksong recently because of Ender Magnolia releasing in early access. In the amount of time that they've been developing Silksong, Ender Lilies was announced and released, its sequel Magnolia was announced, had an EA release and will probably be fully released before they make any sort of statement on the state of Silksong. EL and EM together will probably be similiar in size to the scope of SS so it has to be embarrassing to Team Cherry to have another indie studio start a series in the same genre while they have nothing to show for Silksong. This is what your competition is capable of.
I don't mean this as a HK bad EL good, I like both and was looking forward to SS but Team Cherry are wildly incompetent and there's no reason to have good will towards them at this point. There's times when not making statements on the state of the game is fine, but there comes a point when its time to admit you fucked up.
