I agree, why don't you start here: https://kiwifarms.st/threads/homelab-selfhosting-thread.110297/page-6I have seen a few other threads having tidbits of the information, but I thought centralizing everything can be beneficial.

The hba part i understand. It's the external enclosure and power i have to figure out. Case only holds 2.5" drives. How many drives are you thinking? If it's =< 8 then consider an HBA with those SAS/SATA fan out cables. Most cards have 8 SAS lanes but you can get some which are 16, or put multiple cards into a system. (They're usually PCI-E x8 )
Configuring wireguard myself because it's already easy? Also if you aren't using Tailscale for accessing your self-hosted content - what are you doing with your life?
Do you have access to a 3D printer? If so there are models available for external enclosures that people make for DIY NASesThe hba part i understand. It's the external enclosure and power i have to figure out. Case only holds 2.5" drives.
Nah, this OP is way better.I agree, why don't you start here: https://kiwifarms.st/threads/homelab-selfhosting-thread.110297/page-6
I was pondering whether to pull the trigger on building my own NAS next. Synology has been pretty decent up to now, which is why I didn't go for it earlier. Guess I'd better start scrounging.I am absolutely booty blasted that Synology decided to jump the sharK:
Yeah as mentioned before, I did not notice this thread. I asked staff to merge if possible. My point is that I want a thread with an OP that provides various information and is updated from time to time. This thread is missing that.I agree, why don't you start here: https://kiwifarms.st/threads/homelab-selfhosting-thread.110297/page-6
I never understood why people wanting to build their own NAS would go for synology. You are again tied up in some ecosystem. I think if you already decided to go as far as to build your own NAS and are not in a corpo setting, you should avoid companies like synology and just do things yourself. How da hell was synology ever "build your own" NAS anyway? It's "buy a NAS and insert hard drives!"
I do not, and I would have to figure out power. I'm || <that close to just building a cheap PC with a bunch of drive bays.Do you have access to a 3D printer? If so there are models available for external enclosures that people make for DIY NASes
In my case, it wasn't. I was talking about building one from parts. How da hell was synology ever "build your own" NAS anyway?
While it's not something I've personally encountered, there are applications that won't run in a container. What is the usecase of bloating your setup with purpose built virtual machines in a homelab environment

come to containerland my little chuddies, nobody is going to break cgroups...
