Oh and apparently Menard has picked up the main characters in his car and is busy telling Anne how her father died, complete with an extended flashback of the scene from the beginning.
A flashback or is it?

An underdiscussed detail in the movie (I never noticed, until it was pointed out to me) is that the flashback doesn't match the pre-credits scene. I don't think it's likely to be a mistake, since it would've been a lot less work to reuse the same footage. I believe the discrepancy is meant to imply that Menard is lying about what happened.

In the intro, Dr. Menard is shot in silhouette. He holds the gun steadily in front of him when he domes Dr Bowles. He delivers the line "the boat can leave now" coldly.

In the flashback, the scene is brightly-lit, he can barely bring himself to shoot him, and his line delivery is shaken:

The story Menard tells Dr. Bowles's daughter makes him out to be a hero: he pleads with her father to leave the island, but he refuses. Her father volunteers to be a guinea pig, over his objections, and when he finally shoots him, it's only with great reluctance. Menard is our only source for that version of events, and it makes him out to be a lot more noble than anything else we see him do. I don't think any of it happened the way he said it did.

His wife flat-out tells him he's crazy and threatens to tell the world what he's up to. Whatever that is, we never learn about it. In a normal non-Italian movie there would be a big reveal that Menard is the true bad guy, but instead it's left way in the background. For that matter I don't think we even get a clear explanation for why the boat travels to NYC, or why Menard doesn't approve its departure until Dr. Bowles is dead.

the standard "this shit is from half a century ago and takes a while to get going so temper expectations accordingly" disclaimer
Anybody who needs a disclaimer about watching 50 year old movies probably shouldn't be taking recommendations from me anyway.

the wife and I watched Sinners
if it was about 90 minutes it would have been a decent (if derivative) vampire flick
just drop the first hour to fifteen minutes because nobody gives a fuck about Dolemite buying shit for his club and wrangling music acts, we want Dolemite kicking ass on vampires
also drop the ten extra endings, return of the king ass motherfucker

we absolutely lost our shit laughing when Bootsy showed up, and the lack of an outright jam band fight was a letdown

I saw the whole Ed Gein series with a relative of mine this weekend and my god it's absolute shit

It's one of the most hypocritical and tone deaf series that tries to lecture people on being monsters for enjoying violence while the show jerks itself off for how Ed Gein influenced horror (even though he isn't the big influence but a minor one), putting in shit that never happened that is bordering on tasteless, and having Ed Gein recreate scenes from horror movies.

It doesn't even get into the stupidity of the big killer dance party in the end and the shit that is to make you feel bad for Ed Gein or the scenes where Ed Gein is talking to people to spell shit out for the audience.

It's just absolute slop with the only good performance being Ed Gein's mom.

Oh it's deep within the borderline, shoulder deep. It's why I have zero interest in watching these 'docu-drama' series or however they market them. If I want to hear about a real person doing real things, I don't want made-up bullshit polluting the 'story'. If I want to watch made-up bullshit, well that's why horror movies exist. It's trashy as fuck.

Watched the first episode of It: Welcome to Derry yesterday. It's not good. It's basically a rehash of the first movie, but the kids have zero charm, there's hamfisted racial discrimination drama, and really bad CGI. I don't foresee this getting a second season if all the episodes are this bad.

Yeah, and of course they kill off all the white boys and now the show is going to be about the black girl and Hanlon's dad and grandfather because current year. I knew as soon as I learned it was set in the 60s we were gonna get absolutely beat over the head with RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION and it has not disappointed. In fact, we're probably going to get Native American grievances aired as well in later episodes based on the three guys on bikes that showed up. The entire second episode is "yeah your nice 60s small town America was actually evil and creepy and the black people are the sensible ones." I'm so fucking tired of this shit. Every single new TV show is just a gigantic fucking lecture.

Cinemageddon is having a freeleech on horror and gore movies for halloween, and found some movies with interesting titles
Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator
My Girlfriend Is A Serial Killer
Let's Make the Teacher Have a Miscarriage Club (japanese)
Sex, Chocolate & Zombie Republicans (this is from 1998 )
Horrors of Malformed Men
Vampire on Bikini Beach

You wouldn't happen to have an invite would you? I had a PTP account back in the day with a good ratio.

I skimmed a couple of reviews and apparently the Native American storyline is just as cringy. I'm baffled by the fact that in the first episode they literally have a character say "this isn't the South" but then immediately after that the story is almost entirely about racism.

The second episode didn't annoy me as much as the first did now that I know what to expect. It's just very underwhelming.

Does anybody know where to watch Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera with English soundtrack? I found a DVD version on rutracker w/English but it's super slow torrent (and hoping for hd.)

I actually paid for it on Fandango but it is only Italian. Got to the point where Julian Sands started talking...

An observation someone shared with me that clicked in my brain - you can tell when the maker or makers of a modern indie horror film are Millennial rich kids if the main character works a job like manning the register at a movie theater's concession stand and then they drive around in a new car and live in an apartment that makes the ladies' apartment from Friends look like a closet in comparison. Or they own a successful small business, especially if it's some ridiculously niche shop but they also have unlimited free time and never do any work at all.

I mean, when it comes to horror films, I can be a real vibes over verisimilitude person but sometimes, it's details like that that bug me.

"oh yeah the spare house, we sure can't rent it or sell it. dang we're stuck with that real estate"
I can believe the black mold cancer ghosts or that the dog wasn't just mildly confused, but come the fuck on

That's one of the reasons I love older movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the early Friday the 13th movies, you just had a bunch of kids in a van. That just shows how much Hollywood is out of touch when even the indy movies aren't relatable. Then you have shitty jewtube sin channels that nitpick stupid things like cell phone reception but overlook the barista working at a mom and pop coffee shop in a small town and they just happen to own the one haunted two story house that's a 100 years old on the lake in the middle of nowhere with a new car and 3 dogs and they just bought it on a whim after a bad breakup. Give me hippy kids in a beat up van any day of the week.

so Black Phone 2 was the middest mid to ever mid. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great. It just… was.

It’s probably the best kind of movie if you’re a teenage guy and wanted to bring a girl to a movie for a date or some shit. It’s… just… who cares. That movie did not need to exist.

Rated: whatever/10

Trailer for Scream 7 is out. Like 90% certain that was Matthew Lillards voice at the end.

I am fucking hyped for this.

At the end of the day its just nostalgia bait slop but unlike the I Know What You Did Last Summer and other weak pathetic attempts, it’s still most likely going to deliver some good enough shit. This year has been kind of a drought horror wise, tbh.

Rewatched Color out of Space (2019) (the one with Nicholas Cage) for the first time in a while.
This movie was my introduction to Lovecraft and existential horror in general, I first saw it years ago and I was completely obsessed with it to the point of rewatching it multiple times, but this is the first time seeing it again after an extended period, and after having read the original story too. This is a weird critique because I don't often consider this with movies, but honestly I believe it really would have benefited from a bigger VFX team. Obviously the story and concept is already brilliant on it's own since it's Lovecraft, and I think the adjustments they made to the plot to restructure it into film form worked well without feeling insulting to the original. In fact the entire movie feels like a love-letter to Lovecraft and his work with little nods here and there, they quote the original story multiple times throughout the film and it always fits very well. You really get a sense of respect for the source material that you don't often see with adapted works, even if they do change quite a few things too. I liked the characters and what they decided to do with them, and I like that we get little hints of their history as well. Nicholas Cage's character's obsession with alpacas was kinda lel random but the fact they just don't acknowledge it lessens the cringe and makes it more funny in a subtle way. The daughter being a Wiccan feels like a nice nod to the opening of the original story.

But in my opinion, at times what really holds it back from being amazing are the effects themselves. They do a really good job at creating this horrifying dreamlike atmosphere but I just wish it played more into that, which they just didn't go the full way. I couldn't help but feel my immersion broken during multiple points where certain effects felt particularly awkward or jarring. It didn't cheapen out on the gore and body horror which I appreciate, but even then you can tell they weren't working with much when so many of the more disgusting shots are either extreme close-ups or shrouded in near complete darkness. Many of the trippy moments sound cool on paper and color-wise they look absolutely gorgeous, but it all just... looks so oddly cheap. Which is a shame because you can tell they knew EXACTLY what they were going for aesthetic-wise, but something is just holding them back for some reason? I really wish they spent more time on the VFX, but alas, I believe they spent at least half of the budget on getting Nick Cage in here. Maybe this is a movie that would work a little better while high and your brain isn't nitpicking every single little detail like it tends to sometimes.

The soundtrack is also quite lovely. I never really payed much attention to the music upon my initial viewings, but certain moments stuck out to me this time around to the point that I decided to just listen to the OST on its own. It also pulls off the horrifically dreamy atmosphere quite well and I think it's a pleasant listen. The guy also composed the OST for Hereditary so that's interesting.

Despite its flaws I still love this movie a lot and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of that medium of "dreamy" horror.

I watched Terrifier 3. It's okay. I won't be watching any more Terrifier sequels. Art the Clown can be fun but the only plot to these movies is "clown and [insert evil sidekick] brutally murder a handful of people we don't care about." There's only so many times you can do that. At least the Saw films, another torture porn franchise, had creativity with the traps and different plotlines going on (yes it's so convoluted it's laughable but it's something).

Saw the first episode of Welcome to Derry with a friend of mine. I will say that the costumes, sets, and (for the most part) CGI are quite good. I also liked that it sUbvErTeD eXpEcTaTiOnS by making you think it's going to be a simple rehash of the first film except Pennywise eviscerates the group 10 minutes after they form. Obviously another gang will get together but that was a good moment. I don't understand people complaining about "muh diversity." There's a few black characters and the blatant racism makes sense because racism is a canonical issue in Derry in the book, miniseries, and movies. They have some version of the KKK that killed Mike's parents and a bunch of other poor blacks prior to the events of IT.

I honestly would keep going with the show except it really does look like the leaks about the military trying to weaponize IT may be true. That's just so stupid and ridiculous that I can't stomach it.

Saw Hereditary for the first time. I get the hype, but I'm still a little mixed on it. It's a visually stunning movie and I like the lore it sets up but it just screams "I'm a pretentious art-house horror film, analyze me analyze me!!!" which can be a little annoying. But I guess it kept me entertained enough to finish it and I have no real technical complaints other than it having pacing issues. Overall not bad, though I do think it's somewhat overrated in terms of its status as one of the most beloved horror movies of the 2010s.

Time to settle this once and for all: Halloween 4 or Halloween H20?
View attachment 8125391View attachment 8125392

:lunacy: = Halloween 4
:feels:= Halloween H20

4 for sure. H20 isn't terrible, it's just incredibly bland.

I still can't believe someone gave Stanley money to write and direct a Lovecraft film, he actually completed it, and it was pretty awesome.

Watching The Black Phone now. 10 minutes in and it's already so current year. Dreamy Asian boy riding through the neighborhood with all the girls waving at him, tiny Mexican kid who beats up the comically larger racist bully, foul-mouthed girlboss who yells at police and attacks bullies. Why is every single movie made now like this?
