The trailer made me think. Art really is the biggest horror icon right now, isn't he? I can't think of any recent horror villains that quite reached his level. Feels like we haven't had many good ones in the 2000s at all. Certainly more accurate than the fucking Gallows film that tried to hype up its killer as the next Freddy or Jason.

They tried with Victor Crowley and the Hatchet films, but I'm not sure he caught on. I appreciated the first movie's insane practical gore at least. Mick from the Wolf Creek franchise rules and is hilarious but the movies and TV series all seemed to come out too spaced apart to build any momentum.

The biggest two before Art I can really think off the top of my head is Jigsaw (usually represented by Billy) and I guess Annabelle. Ironically both just dolls that the true villains use rather than the villains themselves. Not counting Pennywise because while he got a big touch up, he's still a very old character.

Slasher movies died in the 90s. We haven't had any good ones in a while.

I keep hearing about Art the clown and the Terrifier movies are they worth checking out? Without having actually seen them I can only say Art has an interesting look.

The only ones that come to mind, other than Jigsaw, are the Creeper and the Wrong Turn cannibals. However, the Creeper will forever be attached to Victor Salva while the Wrong Turn cannibals were relegated to direct-to-DVD status before the 2021 reboot that tried to make them more than just slasher villains.

I mean they're not haute cinema, but they do exactly what they set out to do, unlike virtually every other horror movie of the past 30 years. They're gory, brutal, relentless, and fun. The victims are actually likeable, and Art himself has a mystery/lore around him that more than matches his look. The second movie gets a little long, but it also is much more bonkers (while still maintaining the atmosphere). If you're a horror fan, they're definitely worth checking out (even the short from the All Hallow's Eve anthology is good). Really the only criticisms of the two movies I've heard have been from retards whose opinions should be ignored.

Again, it's not Citizen Kane, but they're great horror movies, far exceeding even the best of the big slasher franchises.

I think the only other big recent horror villain of the past decade is maybe M3GAN.

Though if we're talking about the broader 21st century, then Jigsaw is objectively the most popular horror villain.

As for the Gallows, the issue with that movie is that it did not do anything different despite how much it hyped itself up, the same applies to Brightburn which is just generic evil superman but its horror.

Another Corman produced Alien ripoff I recommend is Forbidden World (1982). The monster is cheesy but has a certain charm to it. The tits and gore is fun. Plus they kill the beast by feeding it cancer.
I was actually like 10 minutes into Forbidden World before I realized I'd already seen it and pulled Terror Within out of Tubi's "users also watched" list. It's not bad at all, but Galaxy of Terror is the champ.

Next up for not-quite-Alien films is Inseminoid aka Horror Planet. (I like the title "Horror Planet" better; "Inseminoid" is just, eh, too much for a movie that's at least trying to play it straight.) In the not-too-distant future, after being artificially inseminated by space aliums, a woman becomes a psychotic killer. So yes, the movie's main monster is a visibly pregnant blonde, the least-intimidating movie monster I've seen in a while. We do get a great scene where a guy knocks her down and stomps on her stomach. I lol'd.

The wikipedia article rambles on with over-analysis of the film, cope-splains that actually, it's not a ripoff of Alien, and even contains completely gratuitous nudity:

You'd almost think somebody involved with the production wrote all that, but who knows.

Fun b-movie, however, be forewarned that it's British.

Speaking of which, there's Progeny (1998) by Brian Yuzna which might just be the first live-action depiction of tentacle rape.

I recall seeing this at the video rental store growing up. It turned out the special effects team would end up working on  Aliens.
