How do you choose your video games?

There's no clear pattern for me it seems. It's mostly word of mouth, some light research, if it sounds cool. Sometimes it's because I liked the devs previous work, not always a guarantee as while I like Metal Gear, I don't feel compelled to check out Kojima's other work. Recently though, I've been kind of frugal so the game's got to be pretty cheap. I rarely make day one purchases unless I really want it.

I usually get game recommends by word of mouth and will watch friends play via Discord.

A mix of things. If it looks interesting and reviews well (steam consensus and YouTubers) balanced with a price I'm willing to pay. It's more of a gut check than an objective list though.

Like a woman looking for a date, I have a huge list of rule out criteria (or at least greatly reduces my interest). Including (but not limited to) if the devs bend the knee to woke mobs on Twitter, if the devs virtue signal about Trump or Elon Musk, or the devs use terms like "rogue-like" or "art-game".

Character creation and RPG elements.

That depends, my most recent obsession was Elden Ring, and I bought that one because I know what to expect from Fromsoft's soulsgames. I've bought games from other developers for similar reasons and I only hold off if I have really good reason to suspect that the game in question will be disappointing to me personally.

If I hear/see/read about a game that I've never heard about before though, I''ll typically look up a video of some gameplay footage and see if it looks appealing to me.

If it catches my interest, I look at screenshots and watch gameplay videos. Those are usually enough to tell if it'll be worth playing. I don't bother with reviews or anything based on reviews.

If I'm skeptical I just watch gameplay videos and decide if I would like it.

Rent. I trust no one anymore. Even my beloved franchises have betrayed everything I like about them. It's not that I don't like change. I just hate the changes they're making for the new audience. Like fuck. Remember when games had cheat-codes and unlockables that were actually cool/useful/silly?

Edit: I don't watch videos because any retard can make a decent game look bad, look no further than DSP on this very website. If you only had to watch his footage, without his commentary, or knowing anything about him and then decide if a game is playable, you'd never play any game he touches.

Valkyrie Profile turned into a generic original God of War clone.
Final Fantasy is moving ever so closer to becoming Devil May Cry/old God of War as well.
God of War turned into Tomb Raider that forces you to hold forward rather than display fucking cutscene. Jesus christ. I hate that hold button cutscene shit. I'm not a child. I don't need to be actively engaged every moment, especially if it's just a narrative transitional scene where it's just people talking, just play the fucking scene. Developers had no problem with this walking talking cutscene shit back when Bioshock Infinite came out and MW2 was the rage, now , it's like you NEED to be pressing a button at all fucking times.

Tomb Raider, ironically is one of the few franchises that actually did get better in this new era.
No More Heroes...didn't change shit and is the same exact fucking game it was on the Wii.
Metal Max Xeno (PS4) was interesting but a huge step backwards from the previous game on the PS2.
Metal Max Xeno Reborn took a mediocre game and remade it into a below average game that was given a 9/10 score from a Destructiod Tranny.

Normally when I'm incredibly bored I'll go down a rabbit hole on steam and wishlist any games that peak my interest, along with friend recommendations.

Google the name of whatever is in 1377x.to, if it looks like it has decent gameplay then i give it a go, decent as in you can play it from start to finish without having to worry about bullshit game design choices like enemies becoming tankier or dealing more damage while still looking the exact same as before.

A little bit of everything, but mainly; history with name / brand, if it looks fun. Some things I'll pay full price for, others I'll wait.

I like games that I know are going to be of good quality, regardless of whether or not I have played it before.

Games of less-than-stellar quality must bring something new or exciting to the table. Otherwise I am not going to play b-tier JRPG or random platformer when I can just play Chrono Trigger or Yoshi's Island again and get the same or superior results.
