How much ammunition is too much?

It depends on your lifestyle and where you live how much money you have really having and ammo room or a safe just for ammo isn't uncommon. Buying bulk is going to save you the most money A lot of places do free shipping after like $500 or something but ammo is so heavy hitting that free shipping minimum can save you a ton right there. 1000 rounds is standard for a case of 5.56 and 9mm and having a case on hand for each caliber weapon you own seems like a good place to start. Plus you want your specialty stuff for home defense that you trust your life with but too expensive to just put into paper all the time. 22 is dirt cheap you can pick up 1000 rounds for like $35 or you used to you probably cant get it at all now. Buy when things are on sale and buy a lot. I haven't even looked all year I just hear gun shortages because of demand and hoping when shit gets back to normal I can find great deals from panic buyers who offload their pandemic stockpiles.

Also shits going to be jacked up right now or hard to find it was like 2 years or more for 22 ammo to come around again after the Adam Lanza event that people thought looked like a false flag to get support for taking guns.

How many enemies do you have? ... Fine, couple mags for each one just in case.
Now, how many potential traitors do you have- people around you that say they support you. ... Nine mags apiece for them.
There's your conservative math on things.
Edgelord out.

Many new barrels take around 200 rounds to break in. It varies due to manufacturer, caliber, material, etc.

As for an actual answer depends on what you want. Hunt? Practical self defense? 3 gun? Depends on your needs.

IIRC it takes you repeating an action 5000 times before it becomes fully instinctual muscle memory or such. As such for things like practical or competition you will easily burn through a fuck load of ammo easy. For hunting typically a lot less especially if it is a hyper specific artisan hunting caliber.

That said yes when in doubt buy more, and buy it cheap stack it deep does work (And be sure to actually go out shoot and practice in something besides nice indoor range conditions). But I figured someone should give a more nuanced answer.

Asking "How much ammo is too much?" is like asking "How much sex is too much?"

Mostly hunting, but also a bit of target shooting, just to keep in practice. I'm not particularly concerned about self defence (and in theory it is illegal to use a firearm for self defence in Australia) , though I think that's in the back of every firearm owners mind.
As far as ranges, I don't think there is many indoor ranges in my state, unless I went to a pistol club. I have a local range that goes out to 400 metres to practice at, which I do pretty regularly.
The consensus seems to be between 500 and 1000 rounds, properly stored. That sounds achievable.
Thanks for a nuanced perspective.

Depending where you live, store it in a cool dry location. Barring that keep the temperature and humidity stable. As variations in temperatures and humanity do more damage then most other things (storing it in an attic for years where it will go from super hot summers to super cold winters)

I recommend storing it in something air tight like a 5 gallon bucket. I also recommend throwing a hand full of desiccant packs in there too (the stuff you see when you buy some goods to keep it free of moisture or mold). It is what I do. Properly stored ammo will outlast you and your kids.

Cabela's in Canada had Barnaul 9mm 115gr FMJ at $.20 cdn/round few weeks ago. Weird fucking times when Canadians pay less for ammo than Americans.

Update: After the exchange rate that's about 15 cents US.

A good general rule is a thousand rounds per caliber is a good minimum, 2-3k for .22lr
Good idea. I usually suggest everyone to get a reloading setup too. You should have literally millions of primers.

2-3k for 22LR isn't even that much. People buy it in boxes of 5k. 10 cents Cdn a round for Mini Mags HPs, fuckers are expensive.

7 billion, if you've got a bullet for everyone with their name on it. You'll never need another.
