She knows Chris better than we do. She knows exactly how to talk to him to get what she wants from him. She can pull the strings and make him dance. He may not like it, but he won't do anything to stop it. At this point, she may not even have to make the threats and demands, because Chris knows they're coming if he does something she doesn't like.
"Crishun, ah might just keel ma'self if ya leave me here alone too long."
"Crishun, ah ain't got nobody else. Ya cain't go out cause I'll git lonesome."
"Crishun, ah ain't lettin' you back in if you leave this house. I'll change all the locks and you'll have to sleep out in the snow."
"Crishun, ah already told the police to arrest ya if yer out past 6. Ya don't wanna go to jail again do ya?"
"Crishun, ah need my med'cine. Drive to town and git it fer me. Don't talk to no strangers. They just wanna hurt ya. Call me in 20 minutes!"
God, I really hope she doesn't say that kind of stuff. Makes a person want to punch a cave into her face for being so abusive. Chris may be a jerk at times (As ironic as it is), but he deserves better than that.
Well, in those few minutes a year that I'm actually able to feel sympathy for Chris, this is one of the reasons why. I mean, think about the Ohio trip. A twenty-six (seven?) year old man was forbidden to drive to another state. Why? Well, according to the CWCki, "
Chris stated his mom was paranoid for his safety, and she suspected Julie might be a police officer posing as an underaged girl.[4] The next day, Chris reiterated that Barb was still against him going to Ohio." Barb - and Bob - didn't trust his judgement. Same thing with his "date" with Emily later on. Bob trusted it was legit, Barb did not, ergo, Bob went on the date with Chris. A man escorted his nearly-thirty-year old son on his first-ever date.
Why did this happen? Why didn't Borb leave Chris to determine his path as other parents of adult children do? Simple - they knew Chris was not emotionally experienced or intellectually capable enough to protect and take care of himself on long trips, or when dealing with people on a one-to-one basis outside of their approval. Okay, so, Chris has problems. So what? A number of people suffer from problems worse than autism and can still go on long trips, dates, etc. Why not Chris?
The reason why is because Borb failed Chris as parents. Again, they
knew Chris had problems. They
knew he had crippling anti-social tendencies and a habit of being suckered by strangers. They
knew about his autism, temper-tantrums, and issues with interacting with others. And they did absolutely nothing about it except try and keep Chris secluded and alone.
Someone once asked if Borb heard Chris screaming up in his room. I responded that if they did, then they had proof that he was up in his room, and not outside getting into trouble. The Love Quest? Well, if all that involved was Chris sitting around drawing pictures or singing off-key while sporting a sign nobody read, no biggie. Really, it was no different than dropping him off at TRU or the Game Place; Chris was effectively driving himself off to day care at the mall or the library. So long as he didn't get banned or the cops weren't called, everything was fine.
It seems that Borb's primary means of looking after Chris was insisting he stay in their bubble of influence. No addressing of his self-destructive issues at all.
