How much does Barb restrict Chris' social interactions?

I seriously think Chris would probably be better off posting videos again. He needs a social outlet, and composing his thoughts into videos would be beneficial. I'd be surprised if he even speaks more than a few sentences a day, and rarely to people.

And kind of like what Harry Partridge said, he could even enable ads on his channel and get a little bit of income from it! Except then he might just see the videos as work and not bother to do any more. And if he got too viral, takedown requests on Youtube have become so common Sega, Sony or Nintendo could decide he's bad publicity and DMCA anything with a hint of a Sonic image or song. The way he felt about the Sonichu reference in that Sega vid, his heart level would be broken by such a "betrayal".

Nah, Chris is paranoid about trolls himself. Barb barely knows what the internet is. Any changes to his internet behavior are because of Chris himself or how (competent) trolls haven't been trying to troll him since Bob died.
I suspect cutting down the internet in the house - probably as a cost saving measure, moreso than a means to suppress Chris - was the biggest factor. It seems reasonable that if the internet is less accessible, he uses it less.

It is down at the house, right? That's at least what I last recall hearing. Even if it isn't, the desktop and laptop are probably long gone - lost under a sea of thrift store garbage.
He doesn't use the internet less, no.

His internet isn't down at his house. The desktop was inaccessible awhile ago (as far as I can recall, anyway), but he'd still have the laptop.

I don't know if he's using wifi at mcdonalds all that much. I mean, sometimes, I guess.

To add to what Marvin said, he's still on the PlayStation Network at least as of one month ago: http://psnprofiles.com/Sonichu&completion=all&order=played&pf=all#content. I'm assuming that charges a subscription fee, right? So it least in terms of Internet vidya he doesn't seem to be employing any cost saving measures. But then again vidya is important business in CWCville.

He goes to McDonalds more just to get of the house out than anything else.

Yeah but those apple slices with "dipping sauce" beckon as well.

Psn is free. The games he downloads and psn plus cost money.
Plus the skylanders game he's playing has physical toys that go along with it. He got 100% on that game. I don't know if they require you to buy the toys to get 100%, but either way, that's exactly the kind of stupid shit that Chris would get into.

guerilla-style shit-and-runs

Ok, that's a funny sentence.

As for the topic at hand, it really is a wonder just how tight her grip on Chris is these days. I wonder if she still uses threats like she did during the Ohio trip? She did threaten to call the cops on her own son for simply leaving the house for awhile to see someone.

She knows Chris better than we do. She knows exactly how to talk to him to get what she wants from him. She can pull the strings and make him dance. He may not like it, but he won't do anything to stop it. At this point, she may not even have to make the threats and demands, because Chris knows they're coming if he does something she doesn't like.

"Crishun, ah might just keel ma'self if ya leave me here alone too long."
"Crishun, ah ain't got nobody else. Ya cain't go out cause I'll git lonesome."
"Crishun, ah ain't lettin' you back in if you leave this house. I'll change all the locks and you'll have to sleep out in the snow."
"Crishun, ah already told the police to arrest ya if yer out past 6. Ya don't wanna go to jail again do ya?"
"Crishun, ah need my med'cine. Drive to town and git it fer me. Don't talk to no strangers. They just wanna hurt ya. Call me in 20 minutes!"

God, I really hope she doesn't say that kind of stuff. Makes a person want to punch a cave into her face for being so abusive. Chris may be a jerk at times (As ironic as it is), but he deserves better than that.

Why do I get the feeling that that's exactly what she says?

Well, in those few minutes a year that I'm actually able to feel sympathy for Chris, this is one of the reasons why. I mean, think about the Ohio trip. A twenty-six (seven?) year old man was forbidden to drive to another state. Why? Well, according to the CWCki, "Chris stated his mom was paranoid for his safety, and she suspected Julie might be a police officer posing as an underaged girl.[4] The next day, Chris reiterated that Barb was still against him going to Ohio." Barb - and Bob - didn't trust his judgement. Same thing with his "date" with Emily later on. Bob trusted it was legit, Barb did not, ergo, Bob went on the date with Chris. A man escorted his nearly-thirty-year old son on his first-ever date.

Why did this happen? Why didn't Borb leave Chris to determine his path as other parents of adult children do? Simple - they knew Chris was not emotionally experienced or intellectually capable enough to protect and take care of himself on long trips, or when dealing with people on a one-to-one basis outside of their approval. Okay, so, Chris has problems. So what? A number of people suffer from problems worse than autism and can still go on long trips, dates, etc. Why not Chris?

The reason why is because Borb failed Chris as parents. Again, they knew Chris had problems. They knew he had crippling anti-social tendencies and a habit of being suckered by strangers. They knew about his autism, temper-tantrums, and issues with interacting with others. And they did absolutely nothing about it except try and keep Chris secluded and alone.

Someone once asked if Borb heard Chris screaming up in his room. I responded that if they did, then they had proof that he was up in his room, and not outside getting into trouble. The Love Quest? Well, if all that involved was Chris sitting around drawing pictures or singing off-key while sporting a sign nobody read, no biggie. Really, it was no different than dropping him off at TRU or the Game Place; Chris was effectively driving himself off to day care at the mall or the library. So long as he didn't get banned or the cops weren't called, everything was fine.

It seems that Borb's primary means of looking after Chris was insisting he stay in their bubble of influence. No addressing of his self-destructive issues at all.

Very good insight as usual.

I remember hearing a prank call where they accused Chris of trying to hit on an underage girl. Barb got on and with this almost slurred, very southern twang bellowed, "YEW STOP TRYAN TA HARM MA SON!" Now, I know there's a motherly instinct to protect one's kids and also to assume they are innocent of all charges of misbehavior made by others until proven guilty, but most parents also ask their kid, "Well, did you do it?" and this often elicits a confession of guilt. This is especially pertinent because Chris has been in trouble before for doing socially inappropriate things due to his autism and low intelligence. Instead of asking them more questions, or even just hanging up the phone and asking Chris WTF they were talking about, she just did kind of a mother lion growl at what she saw were predators (no pun intended) trying to eat her cub.

Bob and Barb seem to have been possessed of the same mentality as Chris himself in regards to problems. Namely, when they have a problem, they just hide their heads in the sand and wait for it to go away or solve itself, and blame the outside world when that doesn't happen. Even if it cost their son a chance at a happy life, they couldn't be bothered to put in a little bit of work.

What I wonder is why Barb is putting Chris on a leash NOW? He's proven time and time again he can't be released into public. The Target arrest, being banned from Fashion Square, and his PVCC stint happened before the "trolling". Chris is too fat and broken to make much of a ruckus now.
