How to get into Sonic?

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
As a kid I played Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. While many people like Sonic 2 the best out of the trilogy, I kinda like Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 with Sonic and Knucled the best. I just remember it being very fun, and you could play as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles.

Although they're quite cheesy, I'll admit that I have a soft spot for the Adventure Games. After that... I think Generations was the last one that I enjoyed greately (Haven't played Colors, though).

So I'd suggest that for the old school ones you do Sonic 3, move on to the Adventure games and then do Generations.

If a real man wants a game from the 90's a real man will play Doom.

k. You know what else IGN does? Praises each new Call of Duty. That's reason enough to instantly invalidate their s**** opinions.

For God's sake, please stop shoving "COD FANBOYS!!!!!11" every fucking time any Sonic game gets a negative review.

get on speed, get some autism vaccines, drink a shitload of monster, GO FAST

The only games I played were Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic CD, as those were the only ones ported to PC at the time when I was "Sonic Age".

I never really got behind the character of Sonic. Whereas Sega wanted us to think a blue, hedgehog was cool, I was under the impression that THIS was cool:

And I'm afraid at eighteen years old I still think the two story tall demon with a rocket launcher for an arm and a crew cut badass with a shotgun is still a lot more cool than a blue hedgehog that goes fast.

One of the smartest things id did when making Doom was hire the artist Grigor Punchauz (sp?) to design the boss monsters.

The second smartest thing they did was making the soundtrack to be played on the Roland SC-55 Mk 2, one of which that I stole from Activision resides not four feet from me. The drums crack like thunder, and the guitar wails like a virgin in her first ecstasy. Good times, good times.

I watch a lot of Let's Plays in my free time and after discovering ClementJ642 on Youtube and watching his Sonic playtroughs (he's doing pretty much every Sonic game in existence) I decided to give the series a shot. So far I've played Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Heroes, both for PC and... it's alright.
Not the greatest games I've ever played, but not terrible either. I had quite some fun with Sonic Heroes, though Sonic Adventure DX was kinda frustrating with some of the glitches and the fishing. Maybe I'll try out some of the other games, especially the older ones.
I've also tried watching some of the cartoons (like SatAM), but apart from that I don't had much exposure to the Sonic fandom yet. I've seen some pretty weird fanarts and fanfics though... :?

From what I have heard DX is an ok port, but most people prefer the original Dreamcast version.

Well, I don't have a Dreamcast, that's why I got the PC version, but maybe I'll try out the Gamecube version for DX someday. One of my main problems with DX for PC was controlling with the keyboard.
I tried plugging in a game controller and it was possible to adjust some of the buttons (like for jumping and attacking) to the controller, while other ones (the buttons for moving) just couldn't be adjusted at all. Don't know if it was the games fault or if I did overlook something.
Maybe the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions are better, but the PC version was pretty frustrating because of that.

As far as platformers go, the original 2D Sonics were okay. As others have said, they were a Sega Man's Mario. At the time, Sega's gimmick was to claim its system was faster than the SNES, and as evidence for this, they showed Sonic zipping around. Truth is, it was all marketing hype. In theory, the SNES was perfectly capable of making sprites move just as fast (hell, either system could make a sprite move faster than the human eye could track, but what would be the point of that?)

With the speed gimmick in mind, what made Sonic good was the level design... you had to design a complex level that a person could navigate through at high speeds, while providing enough challenge to make it interesting, and not so much challenge that you have to be a 10-year-old Japanese kid to beat it. The 1990s Sonic games had that excellent level design. When the series made the jump to 3D, the level design didn't really follow, and the series as a whole never recovered.

Me personally, I liked the series and all, but it does lose something once you realize that the "gotta go fast" element benefited the marketing department more than the player.

Is that photoshopped? I remember watching the walkthrough for lost world, I didn't see anything like that.

I love Sonic lost world! It's the only sonic game that's actually fun.The rest of them piss me off because they're so fucking fast you can't control that little blue bastard so you end up flying into everything because you barely have time to react to anything. :x

I played the PC version with a logitech controller. It worked just fine, try that.

Hm, so maybe it was just my controller then.
Then again, the controller I used was a pretty cheap one.
