When 130- to 156-mph winds are in the forecast, a nuclear power plant may not come to mind as a safe place to be.

But you might be surprised, Jon Wentzel suggested.

“A nuclear power plant is built to withstand all sorts of natural or manmade disasters,” said Wentzel, vice president of communications at the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington.

“They are some of the most robust parts of the infrastructure in the United States.”

While Hurricane Dorian loomed far offshore Friday, the coastal St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant was arranging to cease operations.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires nuclear reactors to shut down in the presence of hurricane-force winds 74 mph — the minimum speed for a Category 1 storm — or stronger. Dorian threatened to pummel the Treasure Coast Labor Day weekend as a Category 4 storm.

At the very least, Florida has somewhat decent building codes after learning it's lesson from getting fucked by Andrew (so fwiw the state of fucking Florida is actually smarter than your average gorilla) so hopefully it won't get completely leveled.

Apparently the Bahamas have been essentially wiped out as far as infrastructure goes. From the looks of things, the US may have to stage an intervention *sigh*

I know I’m late, but has anyone else used this as an opportunity to make a Dorian Thorn reference yet? Lol. That’s all I could think of when I heard the name. Maybe I should be put away somewhere because of that.
 
There's a manatee and her calf trapped in a drainage pond or some shit because they wandered in during the storm.

Manatees seem like they're kinda dumb.
