It is/isn't a law there. It is weird. I mean a cop in the US might kick you in the nuts for calling his mother a cunt, but their is no additional charge he can bring for that and in fact he could be sued for the battery. Somehow in Germany there is a bureaucratic recourse in the quasilegal sense for being insulted. I have as many affirm it as deny it so it is a very odd area of the law there.

Edit: There is the concept of contempt of court here where you can be fined or jailed for insulting the court, but not out on the field with police.

It was more a form of defamation as he said "they didn't do their jobs!" publicly.
Technically insulting the police is not more or less illegal then insulting a normal citizen, but the police takes the reports, and is of course quick to report on their own behalf
And of course judges, attorneys and police know each other (on a local level) and are more quick to defend their own.

He did get sentenced for insulting the police, and I think this was his most severe punishment in the last trail.
But since he is on probation, he is still free to roam Middle Francia.

You can definitly be fined for insulting cops or the Ordnungsamt, even for harmless stuff like "geh mir nicht auf die eier, du spast", the letter you get states your insult and that copper XYZ "felt that his honour was injured(fühlte sich in seiner Ehre verletzt)", plus the amount you're fined for.
It depends on the copper, though, some don't bother with an Anzeige when they're getting rightfully insulted.
