If fiber can't be broken down by the body, why is it good for nutrition?

there are two types of fiber present in most edible plant foods: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber.

soluble fiber is usually in the softer parts of fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. it absorbs water, forming a viscous fluid that slows the digestion of other carbohydrates (fiber itself is an indigestible carbohydrate). this helps prevent blood glucose spikes, and therefore helps regulate insulin secretion. it also increases the feeling of fullness (satiety), and helps bind fat and cholesterol in the food with which it's eaten, thereby preventing some of those fats and that cholesterol from being digested. this is how and why it's able to increase the density of stool.

insoluble fiber is usually found in the in the outer, coarser parts of plant foods; the peels, husks, shells, and stems. it does not absorb water. it adds bulk to stool, which then draws water to the colon, making the stool easier to pass.

Why is there so much controversy regarding every aspect of human diet and nutrition?
What @dick brain said but also because food is a huge industry and there's a fuck load of money thrown around in all directions by people trying to make money off of convincing you to eat their shit whether or not that shit is good for you or whether or not it should even actually be classed as food and then there's another huge industry out there throwing money about trying to convince you not to eat that shit and to use their whatever to fix yourself because you listened to the first group too much.

And then both those groups throw a whole bunch of money at the people who are supposed to be researching this all this shit objectively so they can say the shit they're selling is good shit and people should buy and consume it and hence you end up with a whole bunch of contradictory bullshit and then finally on top of all that you have a bunch of journos reporting on the biased research and because journos are fucking retarded, they inevitably get everything wrong and so you're left with just a bunch of confused fucked up bullshit and because the average person doesn't grasp basic human biology, they buy into all the bullshit.

bananas and oranges provide lots of potassium which I do not need to state the benefits of
Virtually every kind of food contains potassium, including meat. The body maintains a balance of electrolytes, and consuming too much potassium, calcium, sodium, whatever, will only increase your likelihood of developing kidney stones.
it also increases the feeling of fullness (satiety)
Absolute nonsense. It will, as you say, keep blood glucose from spiking (somewhat) which would otherwise leave you at the mercy of the sugar-hunger feedback loop, but it does not in any way satiate hunger. It will increase the feeling of "fullness", which is to say, it will make you bloated with gas and shit, but that's not the same thing as satiety, which is a hormonal response.
and helps bind fat and cholesterol in the food with which it's eaten, thereby preventing some of those fats and that cholesterol from being digested
Fat and cholesterol is good for you and you should want to digest it.
Again, if you eat a terrible sugar-based diet, which most people do, fiber can help alleviate the damage, but it's not actually good for you.
Eat less plant matter and drink less water for optimal nutrition and health!
Drink more water is decent advice given at a population level because dehydration is generally worse than overhydration. But it is tautological to say that drinking too much water is sub-optimal.
The notion that you should be eating food specifically to keep you from digesting other food is self-evidently fucking stupid. If you're eating too much fat and sugar, eat less fat and sugar. Eating fiber as an antidote for the other garbage you eat, while maybe heuristically good advice on a mass scale considering that everybody is just going to eat trash anyway, is not actually optimal. Any fiber niggers who want to bitch at me for saying so, enjoy eating literal shit, because that's what fiber is.

You have got to be the dumbest motherfucker on this website and there is some stiff competition for that spot.
Every interaction I've had with you is you whining that I'm deviating from an opinion that you copied from somebody else. I will continue to deviate from your conventional "wisdom" as it pleases me.

It isn't good for you. If you eat a shitty diet of mostly sugar and processed garbage, it might help give structure to your feces, but ideally you should be eating very little fiber. You should be digesting the vast majority of whatever you swallow. This is a controversial opinion, but there is a big industry in selling "fiber supplements" like psyllium husk, which would otherwise be literal garbage thrown away. A high fiber diet just means you have more shit inside you, and the bacteria in your gut feeds on it, producing gas, which pressurizes your insides and "helps" you pass the inert matter rotting in your colon.
Fascinating opinion. Do you favor a carnivore diet? What about milk, cheese, and yogurt? I assume bread is out of the question.

They hated this man because he told the truth. Working with kids, fiber is a must for little Timmy and his exclusive white bread diet, it's great at what it does but what it does isn't "required". You're body is designed to cope with fiber, just like it's designed to cope with kernels and seeds. It's not designed to cope with a diet of nothing but simple starches. The fact fiber helps you cope is a fun fact but it's not mandatory.
Why is there so much controversy regarding every aspect of human diet and nutrition? It's not like there are 100 different opinions on treating broken bones, cuts, abrasions, etc. but you can find advocates of literally every conceivable type of diet and people who all swear by their own chosen ideas. I don't get it.
Because everyone knows a guy. I had an argument with some dude who was literally a trained veteran wilderness first responder, dude outranked surgeons once you got an hour away from a hospital. For some reason he believed you had to drink water every 30 minutes or you would get unbalanced and your pee/drink cycle would get out of whack. People like to think that the human biology is particularly complex but we're basically designed to chug along on potatoes and beef, and drinking when we're thirsty, but we'd like to think that the medical professional who held our lungs together for 6 hours didn't make that shit up. So when the fat fuck who carries around a water bottle for the first time in their life feels better after actually drinking water for the first time in their life, they become a little prophet.

I swear people turn in to redditors the moment some shit you learned in highschool around the same time you were told what a cervix was gets contradicted by other people talking about shit they learned in highschool, or more realistically on youtube shorts. Imagine getting mad at video games the internet , dietary Fiber?

while i tend to avoid ad hominem arguments, you're such an insufferable cunt that i'll make an exception.

It will increase the feeling of "fullness", which is to say, it will make you bloated with gas and shit, but that's not the same thing as satiety, which is a hormonal response.
satiety is recognized by the nervous system, to which the endocrine system then responds.

Fat and cholesterol is good for you and you should want to digest it.
high-density lipoproteins (hdl cholesterol) and moderate amounts of triglycerides are beneficial, but low-density lipoproteins (ldl cholesterol) and high triglycerides are the greatest contributing factors for developing heart disease, which is the leading cause of death, both in the u.s. and globally.

The notion that you should be eating food specifically to keep you from digesting other food is self-evidently fucking stupid.
where did i state that? where did i even insinuate that?
i didn't; i simply stated the functions of the the different types of fiber. i didn't assert any opinion.

i will now, though ... perhaps you should consider some fiber to help with that verbal diarrhea of yours.

Your microbiome is basically slave colonies of bacteria that do the nitty gritty that turn complex starch molecules into by products that are digestible. Cows need to do this multiple times because grass fucking sucks nutritionally. Eat the fiber, let the stomach bugs work for you instead of eating factory slop.

The universe is complex and it is very possible we will find new and interesting nutritional deficiencies as diets change and then find out it was like the British navy reintroducing scurvy by storing their lime juice in copper kettles.

You can also eat a super fatty diet to have everything slide out, but that gets kinda old.
It's also gross as hell. Sure, taking a shit isn't something clean in the first place but you should want a better shit. I don't know why anybody has to argue against that.
