If you found a wallet on the ground, what would you do?

I found one and put it in a big blue mail drop-box once, I don’t know if that actually works but I kinda hope it did.

Either way, the alternative involves more work than I care to do.

Check for ID. If there's no address but there is a bank card, hand the whole lot in to the bank and let them get in touch with the owner.

(They actually do that. Surprised me too)

Take the money and send the wallet back to the owner if the wallet contains an ID. This has happened to me, I wasn't even upset to lose the money because losing everything else in it is way more of a pain in the ass. The lost money is the price of being a retard and losing the wallet in the first place.
This, but with the caveat that I would drop it in the nearest public postal service box. The Post Office will, last I recall, return lost property with an offical address on it and this way I don't need to pay for postage myself or leave a return address.

Quick mention re: dropping it in the mailbox: depending where you are, the person will probably not get their IDs back. For example, it is the policy of Canada Post that any government-issued ID found in a mailbox's outgoing mail slot is returned to the issuing authority, free of postage. If, say, your British Columbia driver's license is found by any mail carrier in Canada, they will return it to the provincial government of BC, who are the issuing authority, who will then process the card as "lost by cardholder and returned by a third party", which means immediate cancellation of the card. (edit for clarity: going this route is a good and effective way to protect the identity security of the cardholder, but it does not save them the inconvenience of replacing all their shit.)

The only way to ensure the person doesn't need to reapply for their IDs is to get it back to them without involving the authorities. I can't speak to the policies of the various issuing authorities in other places (New York state alone is a Frankenstein's monster of dozens of issuing authorities for some types of documents) but you might want to look into that if you ever find yourself in this situation.

Firstly, don't be a retarded person. Put a card with your phone number in your wallet. So if you lose it, anyone who find it can contact you.

If you find a wallet, if you can't find a way to easily contact them. Give it to the police. "Hey I found this wallet, bye." It doesn't take much.

I once accidentally dropped my wallet on a train. It was found by someone who opened it. Looked at my student ID. They happened to work at the college and I had it back the next day. Of course I had cancelled my cards. It was at Christmas and I got out of buying people presents because I had to wait for new cards.

Charge a 25% finder's fee if there's any cash in it. Depending on the owner, maybe jizz on the ID picture.

Take his social security if it’s in there and his credit card. What money he’s carrying in there, I really don’t give a shit for it. Probably only $5.
