Even executions by hanging of the neck were carried out by a sudden drop, which would sever the upper portions of the spine. I'm not sure about humans, though I don't see why the same principle wouldn't apply, but you absolutely can deglove something. For wild hares and squirrels, that's the method most used to get clean pelts.
