I'm getting too old for this shit.

Is there anyone to pass the torch to? There are few people like null who could handle this type of website, but if there is anyone they probably already post here. Just a thought. I'm working to archive my pages in case everything goes down...

I'll miss this place if it goes but I can see why you'd want to nuke it if you were going to start a family. Don't worry about us. We'll just go and plague the normie sites with our sockpuppet accounts. Lolcows were always false gods, scuffed celebrities for Internet autists.

This would be a great time to pivot into something more related to decentralized tech.

I am like... really, really new; but I specifically joined because I heard a convo where @Null was talking about that, and it's something I'm really interested in as well.

@Null, I hope you find a way to keep both the site and your sanity. That being said, let me know if you ever wanna chat about opsec/anonymizing tech/privacy. I've done some work in that field. Not a lot of money there either, but there are some cool projects you might find fulfilling.

You've been at it for such a long time. Anyone who's done something long enough like this would get tired of it down the line. I completely get it. If you need to take a long break and reevaluate yourself, please do so. I hope you will feel better soon.

Well, as someone around your age, Null, I feel it man. Our lot is a lonely one in our generation, as much as it might be to your chagrin to have empathy from actual homosexual furry trash.

I love this site, really wish I could support you more man. Had some good times lurking, good times posting. Really wish more would get as serious as you are about free speech. I've been trying but man. People really do just want their dipshit little hug boxes. I'd argue actually that the age of the lolcow isn't over it's just we have too many dipshits now the the only ones that stand out are just horrible monsters like Yaniv or sad declines to watch like OPL.

I feel so sad when my younger coworkers talk about Twitter like it means anything and saying they had tough debates on there and then just latch onto the popular hashtag like the good little corporate whore trend chasers they all are. I miss the wildwest of the internet and seeing the younger generation experiencing the internet and thinking twitter is edgy just makes me sad. I hope they all get raided and called dumb niggers (in minecraft).

I'm glad this forum has been around to let the world know about the embarrassing and horrifying dregs we've all laughed at. I hope it can stay but I also have watched everything else that made me love the internet in my youth die an inglorious death so this would just be another body for the pile. I dread the sanitized corporate future that awaits the internet and the death of the free exchange of all ideas and the new found cover and safety such will provide all the dogfuckers and kiddie diddlers.

I do wonder, what will become of the pathetic whelps that suckle on their small amounts of victim points from being mocked on this site going forward? What of the pathetic existence of cows like ADF, who's only real point of victimization he desperately craves is us constantly misgendering him and not to mention; we would have been the only ones to care about his eventual death. There are others but, ultimately, we may never know.

I'll be around for however much more of this ride there is left, I'll be around for the Mad at the Internet streams but if it all has to come to an end, so be it.

You do what you need to do Null, it's been fun so far and hope it can be again for you.

I get null's focus on section 230, he is possibly directed affected by the outcome. But there is a bigger picture beyond just the pro or anti Trump side of it. Silicon valley has taken a side, and it's a very censorship heavy leftist one. Doesn't that factor into all this free speech love somewhere?

These mega corporations run by elitists enjoy legal protections that should only apply to public platforms, but at the same time they actively censor content based on politics. It's truly evil, and I'm just as affected by being deplatformed everywhere else on the internet as I am potentially affected by this site closing down over it.

Trump is retarded and probably doesn't understand how the internet works like most ppl in their 70s, and who knows if him lashing out at section 230 is all he wants or part of some bigger plan. But what I do know is things aren't sustainable. I am not a trumptard, I am not a libtard. I'm just a plain old regular tard who sees that things as they are: incredibly broken.

Null: please don't take the proTrump side's support of him as an attack on you or free speech. It's more complicated than that. I am for free speech, I am for this site continuing if that's what null chooses to do, but I am also for Trump fighting back against silicon valley, even in his misguided and probably ineffective way.

good god how did we get here? Everything is so fucked, but I refuse to let the state of world keep me down.
Trump might be a big crybaby over Section 230, but he's also the guy in charge. And it doesn't help that the DNC also support the removal of 230, albeit for completely different reasons. If it passes, we're all fucked because what happens in the US will no doubt affect other countries, and the fallout will be immense regardless of if it's Trump or Biden who calls the order.

While I think Null could have handed the initial reaction a whole lot better than "Go full on twittard" over what is basically a typical Trump hissyfit on the one platform that still keeps him around for whatever reason. He has a point in questioning a lot about the site's future, and equally as importantly, what it's presently become. 2016 basically became the turning point when it came to internet culture, and with KF in particular. The amount of negativity, which I admit I've contributed to, is astonishing to behold, and it's basically all that the site is about at this point. Most of the big lolcows like Chris, Mr. Enter, Dobson, MovieBob, the Channel Awesome Crew, Wu and the like have become either so set in their ways it stopped being funny on both ends, or it's gotten to the point where it's near A-Log levels of hate. Sure there's some that deserve it (usually pedophiles or the animal fuckers), but it's to the point where I'm stuck browsing the off topic boards or a small smattering of lolcow threads because of it.

And speaking of, I think a huge part of the overwhelming negativity going on has to do with the News and Happenings boards. While the ideas aren't terrible in theory, the execution leaves way too much to be desired in the long run. Again, I admit to being involved a lot in those threads, but even in the threads I take part in, I see a lot of nonsense and bullshit being flung around if the story's not about some retard doing retard shit. Those usually get a laugh out of me once and a while. But the amount of political stories, no doubt thanks to the media hyping that shit on a 24/7 basis, have ruined the overall experience for everyone and over time, seeped into the already slowly deteriorating landscape.

As for my honest thoughts as to where to go from here? That's harder to put into words. having been around since the site went from Chris-exclusive to what it is today. I've seen, and been a part of, a lot of shit that's happened. The site's basically usurped 4chan and 8chan as Public Enemy No. 1 for lolcows and the internet at large. And simply just shutting down A&H, or any of the other troublesome are only a band-aid fix at this point. People aren't going to stop coming after the site until it's gone completely, and Null's effectively backed into a corner thanks to all the factors that's been going on recently with Trump, the site's haters, and the community at large. There's really not that many options left imo. We could keep going until Section 230 passes, but if/when it does, what then? There's not many places on the internet that are like the Farms. Social media is cancer incarnate, Reddit is full of fags, and even the Chans are fucked beyond belief.

I know this is getting wordy as shit, so I'll leave it at this; Josh needs to figure this out on his own. We can suggest things to him, but ultimately this is his own decision. Though I'd advise holding off on the family until after all this is said and done. Families are in and of themselves stressful, and it'd be a terrible way to go if he dies from stress between dealing with the site and trying to start a family at the same time.

Dumb fuckers blindly supporting repealing 230 because it’s Trump doing it are part of the cancer.
I love how they keep forgetting how that if Trump passes it, they'll also be affected by it.

Tough spot to be in. I'd be sad to see the place go, but I don't think anyone sane expects you to do this forever, although I know very many of us would prefer you pass the torch to... someone... instead of just nuking the entire thing. There is a lot of history and information here that genuinely is of benefit to mankind, even if most of them don't realize it. A lot of pedophiles, zoosadists and other dangerous people cataloged and exposed; without the farms the world very well could be in an even worse place than it currently is. The biggest hurdle I see with transitioning to a new owner is the fact that very, very few people out there have the experience or technical know-how required to keep a site like this running and considering the amount of shit and pain you've had to go through to turn this place into the fortress it is... many others would have committed suicide by this point; all that and the question of who exactly would take over the site and how to be sure it isn't a long-con gayop. All said, take care of yourself and don't beat yourself up thinking you need to keep watch eternal over KF.

I agree that the Lolcow Salon is probably the best section. Usually (grain of salt) it sticks to mocking lolcows and doesn't turn into semi-schizophrenic rants about Jews, Soros or whatever. Those posts are annoying, boring and a big waste of energy.

I hope you can reach the right conclusion for you, maybe take a break from us spergs. But no matter what, thanks for making this site. I had lots of fun and space to draw some ridiculous shit on a different account but most of all this place reminded me that not everyone's a brainwashed yes man. Really, to me freedom of speech is something of great value, something that's hard to regain after you lose it. And not to get all sappy (I will) but this was/is a place I could experiment with voicing my opinion. Now it's becoming easier in general, not only on KF, so for that I'll always be glad it exists/existed. I hope it's not a good bye. But it was great.

As a sperglord approaching 30, I also feel the pull of wanting to start a family. No advice on that front, but I'm currently taking applications for my future ex-wife.

In all seriousness though, a family probably isn't going to fix your problems by itself. Just focus on meeting people and taking care of yourself, and the family will probably follow.

You’ve sacfrificed a lot to help preserve things people are just giving away freely. So like you said, fuck it. Close the site for all it matters, you’ve got the respect of people like me no matter what. Do right by you. And if you don’t have a therapist, get one.

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through an existential crisis, but you really shouldn't be so down on yourself. You've created a truly great website, and through it you've brought thousands of people together from all corners of the globe, and to varying degrees, it's had a lasting impact on all of us. We may not know each other personally, but the sense of community on the site is no less real, and without you, we wouldn't be here. Don't ever think that we are not appreciative of you for that.

As for the more personal stuff, you really have no need to fret. Wanting to settle down and start a family is natural for most people, but it's not something you need to rush into when you're a man in the 21st century who's not even 30 yet. Give it time. It's increasingly normal nowadays for guys to wait until they're over 50 before contemplating fatherhood, and in my experience, the guys who do wait are almost universally better off for it. You are still very young, enjoy it while you can.

If that's what you got from my attempt at explaining the other side, bravo. You assume ending section 230 is the exact opposite of defending free speech, and that's where we differ. I see it as a possible first step in correcting the horrible situation our country is in with silicon valley censorship. Instead of assuming the worst about someone who doesn't share the same hypothetical outcome as you do, you could focus on how much we have in common.

But no, even though I don't blindly follow Trump you assume I do. Even though I support free speech you assume I don't and "don't give a shit about defending it". Everything about how you argue is a microcosm of how fucking broken and politicized everything has become. ANy other hate assumptions you want to throw my way so you can feel indignant and dismissive of everything I say?

You argue like a redditer. First label the other as wrongthink, and then attack the label instead. I thought this was a last refuge where that wasn't the norm? I don't hate you, I refuse to assume the worst about you, and hope you can open your eyes and see that I'm not the enemy.

All I wanted was to show null that there is a middle ground. People who like him, free speech, this site, and some of what Trump is doing. What does that make me again?
It's a "possible first step" in the sense that deposing Saddam was a "possible first step" to Iraq becoming a modern neoliberal democracy; yes, that can happen, but not if you just blindly blunder forward like an elephant trampling through a clearing- which is exactly what you endorsed Trump doing. If you try to accomplish a twenty-step plan only knowing your first step and goal, and planning to wing the other nineteen, you will fail.
And lol "hate assumptions". I'm not assuming anything beyond what you've already admitted; that you're a tard, and thus don't know shit about what you're talking about. Apparently, you're also a tard that needs a hugbox.

Despite the unusual nature of your situation these are pretty normal feelings for someone your age. It's good to stop and take stock of your life before you turn 30, because after it happens you'll realize that nothing has really changed. You'll still be on whatever trajectory you were on before, just hopefully a bit more mindful about steering towards where you want to be in the future.

I'm not going to offer you any advice because I know it's something you have to figure out for yourself. What I'll say is this:
  • I'm happy to continue supporting the site in its current form.
  • I'd be happy to give you the same amount of support for a smaller and/or private site that was solely about laughing at weird people.
  • I think there are enough other donors who are mostly here for the lolcows that the site could survive if you wanted to cut out all the politics and Internet Bloodsports shit that seems to give you such a headache.
  • I hope you can find a way to do what's best for you without completely scattering this entire community to the wind, but if that's what you need to do then nobody who's worth giving a shit about will judge you for it.
  • On the off chance that any Kiwis want to keep in touch, you can find me on Twitter as @SpedestrianKiwi.
Also, as someone who joined in 2019 and hates politics, I'm officially one of the only good newfags now. Eat shit /pol/tards.

1. If you do start a family, I'd highly advise doing it almost anywhere but Murica. The regulatory environment here is hostile. Once married, you have no rights. Granted most guys start loading up on debt, because most women don't care whether it's debt or equity spending as long as you show them the money. So if you thought you were running on a treadmill now, well, be prepared to run 10x faster than you ever thought possible. And if you crash and burn, well, it's your risk and her reward. See you in court.

2. Running a site like this will never win you money. Hell, Reddit which is supposed to be the normie version of this site is a chronic moneyloser and lives on the charity of random investors. At least you're paying your way? You're doing better than Reddit ever did. I wouldn't say you haven't accomplished nothing - you know quite a bit about the plumbing of the internet and about the nuts and bolts of how to run a high traffic site, those skills are translatable to somewhere else - although - I guarantee you that the places you'll ply those skills at, you will be unhappy working for. I take it you weren't exactly happy working for Jim and Hotwheels? At least they were a small startup, you have no idea what a megacorp is like or how suffocating it can be. You have been warned. There are worse fates out there than what you got.

3. If you're getting burned out running this site and you feel you need to do something else, it's your site dude. Do a moot and sell it to someone else. I guarantee you someone will come out of the woodwork to datamine, I mean, buy the site from you. People will bitch at you no matter what you do. People will hate on you no matter whether you're famous or not. People will be dumb, always. That's just how they are.

4. Go outside. Ignore the Karens. There's a whole big blue room out there.

Null, what you are feeling is something I struggle with everyday. I'm a bit older than you but facing some of the same concerns. I'll never have a family. I didn't want children or anything, but thought it'd be pretty nice to have a relationship with someone I had good rapport with, but that has passed. This is the time to really be worrying about it. We just get uglier from here on out.

The fighting for free speech thing isn't worth it anymore. We've lost and it's a matter of time. That's why I was sort of laughing about it when it was announced. I gave up. If they want KF down they'll find a way to take it down, and they probably will eventually. The wider culture has shifted away from caring about free speech and things are just going to get worse and worse.

I disagree that the forums are not special. Null, this is one of the last places I can post. I've been banned from most everywhere. You can't communicate with anyone anymore! But still there is KF. Null, maybe this place isn't what it used to be, but it's still something, and if KF goes there too goes most of the worthwhile edgy Internet. I'm sure it'll so down someday, but I'd prefer it to be later instead of sooner. Yeah, it's starting to be kind of like a Something Awful now, but this place actually retains SA's good parts and few of its bad parts. The main reason SA turned to shit was because Lowtax was a faggot and his moderators and friends were faggots. It's not the same here.

If the lolcow thing is over--and I don't think it is--then transform the forums into something that embraces the widening of purpose to fit its widening userbase. KF is pretty much the last big community where the spirit of the free speech web 1.0 mentality still exists. It's really okay if it changes. It's still something good.

So, to address your three main concerns:

1. How do I move into stability and towards a more fulfilled person?

Do this internet shit less, do real life things more, and go and do things you've never done before. Hopefully they give the world back to us sometime soon, with this coronavirus shit. The internet is garbage, it's barely worth saving at this point, and you don't want to spend your life with all your memories being behind a computer screen. You know those memories about internet drama don't last like your salient, real life experiences.

2. How do I refocus my efforts so my workload is more manageable?

Keep the free speech shit more in your personal domain and less in your financial/economic domain. Don't try to make your money on fringe free speech business models and shit. Chase the money first and foremost, this is your life and more than half of the people whose free speech you will defend will not defend yours.

So put back the dial on the free speech stuff, and increase your priority on making money, even if it's just in terms of your psychological attention. Increasingly rely on moderation staff. Put people into positions based on how level-headed, reasonable, consistent, and fair they are. Don't be a Lowtax and select your leaders based on them being friends of friends. That's what really fucked things up, SA was run by idiots.

If the forums are making life worse then step away from them however much you need to. You don't owe anyone anything.

3. How do I have fun again?

See my answers to 1 and 2. This life on the internet shit is something we are too old for, I've missed out on a lot of experiences sticking to my computer all day like a fucking nerd. I'd suggest develop yourself in some skill or hobby that has nothing to really do with technology or computers or the internet.

Whatever you decide, Josh, I hope everyone will support it. I’ve had a lot of respect for you ever since I found this place back in 2015, and if you’re not enjoying yourself with this then I hope you can find what it is that you can enjoy. You’ve done a lot for a lot of people, and you deserve to get back some good for yourself,
