I've thought about this before, when was Chris' point of no return. Whenever I think about it, i'm always reminded of the story of Dr Faustus, the man who wanted to be the most powerful man in the world. He sold his soul to the devil to learn every secret of the universe, under the proviso that after 24 years, he would be damned to hell for eternity. Faustus, not unlike our hero Chris then proceeds to waste the opportunity he has. Anyhoo, one of the major discussion points is When Faustus is damned. When he sold his soul? When he slept with a demon? When the angels visit him? When Mephastophiles warns him of Hell? Or does he always have a chance of redemption right until his last hour?

As for my personal opinion, I think it should have become clear to his parents that he was hopeless when he couldn't keep a minimum wage job. If Borb had been more receptive, swallowed their pride and admitted that Chris has problems, right now as we speak Chris could've been living a weird little life sheltered accommodation with a menial job.

This will be the most optimistic post of all time, but he can still make it. He was born into a maelstrom of fail but he can still make it. He's got psychological problems but he's not brain dead. He has four (mostly) working limbs. He has access to the Internet, meaning he can see what's out there. He doesn't have a substance abuse problem. It would be painful but he could still make it if he really devoted himself to it.

Buuuuuuuut...he probably won't. (:_(

The mixture of his autism and bad parenting already did its number. But I would say when he graduated High School. That IMO is when he began showing his USI side when he didn't get that art award.

Barb's the anchor tied around his leg.

It was when he got the tug-boat.

It removed from him any reason to mature.

Why get a job when you can sit on your ass all day?

Why try to better yourself when you can sit on your ass all day.

Why shower when...well I'm sure you get the idea.

The tug is the only thing enabling Fatty to survive in his current manner. That's why I've always been a big propent for him losing the tug. Sitting around all day every day is what is killing him, he's got no reason to change anything, he's as happy as a pig in shit.

I do believe that if he had no other choice Fatty could work at a job and keep it. He would learn how to co-exist with other people. and hopefull lose his ego as he builds life experiences. Hell he might even end up happy. Sure he'd get fired a few times but he can learn and I think in the end a simple job would give him something to cling too.

Idleness is poison for the soul.

Now, more than ever, I'm hoping the original elementary school "autism papers" will come to light. That could be a treasure trove of information.

This is a very random thought you've posted here. But, to answer it, I think the moment he was most hopeless was when he was kicked out of CC English class. His high school world was a deliberate construct presented to him as a genuine experience, once the harsh fist of reality planted itself square on his nose, that was it. Look at everything that followed. Up until that, he was just an unremarkable slow kid that was asspatted and handed a HS diploma.

I would say that being born to Borb, as well as the Watch and Win Sweepstakes, are what steel-plated shut any hope of living a normal life for Chris.

The sweepstakes was probably a very significant contributor to Chris' sense of entitlement and the apparent belief that he can just sit around and wait for his desires to be fulfilled for him. An example of this belief is Chris' "love quest" for an "Aryan supermodel" (as the CWCki put it) to just approach Chris out of the blue and go out with him and bear his GodBear-basically-promised daughter, Crystal.

i would definitely hesitate to call him happy

Very good point. Part of growing up and being an adult is having to work in some capacity so that you contribute to society. That work can be just regular work, school (meaning that you go to school as a choice rather than as an obligation), homemaking/child-rearing, or even just volunteer work. The fact that Chris hasn't done any of these things in years is pretty telling. He's been sheltered from having to be productive which has totally stagnated him.

Honestly, I'd say that doing volunteer work would (hopefully) do wonders for Chris in the long run, but we all know that there's no way in hell he'd help anyone without being forced to.

This is very much a Random Thoughts sort of topic, and not really ideal for its own thread.
