Researchers at The University of Western Australia have found that self-identified "incels' (involuntary celibates, young men who cannot find female sexual partners), present a national security issue.


In a landmark paper published today in the Australian Journal of Political Science, Incels are determined to have killed at least 50 people and injured at least 58 more since 2014—statistics comparable to the number of victims of Islamic extremism in the same period. However, Incels are receiving little preventative attention.

Considering the recent rise of high-profile misogynistic violence in Australia, the authors call for the Australian government to label Incels as a security threat and, in doing so, adopt preventative programs to address misogyny in the community.

Project co-author Dr. Sian Tomkinson, from UWA's School of Social Sciences, said Incels were part of a network called the Manosphere.

"The Manosphere contains various groups who believe that feminism has overtaken society and that men must fight back in order to survive," Dr. Tomkinson said.

"In extreme cases, Incels become radicalized online and commit attacks against everyday men and women, who they blame for their misfortunes."

Co-author Dr. Tauel Harper, from UWA's School of Social Sciences, said one of the great dangers of trying to combat ideological extremists such as Incel was the creation of a 'suspect community," which could encourage even more extreme behavior.

"In order to avoid this scenario with 'the manosphere' we present a program to tackle misogynistic views at the community level," Dr. Harper said.

"Key to this effort is to ensure that public figures and anyone who comments on violence against women understands that gendered violence presents a threat to public security.

"Comments that make gendered violence seem justifiable or the fault of the victim have been shown to further encourage violent attitudes and behavior."

Co-author Dr. Katie Attwell, also from UWA's School of Social Sciences, said misogyny had been killing women for centuries.

"What Incel has done is make misogyny dangerous to everyone, not just women. The very broad and public nature of this threat means that the government must now deal with misogynistic attitudes as an issue of national security."

Upon reconsideration I think above all else incels are cowards. They're not like your hardcore RaceWarNow, Jihadi or Ruby Ridge types. They're pudgy pansies. @Shiversblood of all people made a really good point about them not being streetsmart. Even Elliot Rodger in his manifestos described himself as a nervous wreck who cried every time he encountered some kind of setback in his life. Of all the lunatics out there, the least threatening are probably incels.

Eliot Rodger also tried to start his incel rampage at a sorority house. When they wouldn't let him in, he didn't force his way inside despite having a weapon, or ram down the doors with his BMW. Instead, he got back in the car and proceeded to just shoot whoever was on the street, mostly dudes, probably crying the whole time that he didn't even get to kill the Stacys. And instead of going out in a blaze of glory, when the cops showed up , he just ate his gun.

Cowards AND low-effort cowards at that.

has historically been dealt with then you will see increasingly strict measures to crackdown on them which either work early on or don't; If it doesn't work then sit back and watch the country capitulate in another decade or so.

I believe Dylan was the mental case, and Eric was a manipulated victim without self-esteem who was used by a social pariah to do cruel things. I know the difference is fuck all, but they did have a direction that was lead by one of them.

If Eric Harris hadn't entered the picture, Dylan Klebold would've killed himself sooner or later even without Harris's influence, but who knows if he would've planned to take anyone with him or not

True, but there was a lot of exaggerations, misconceptions, and outright falsehoods being reported in the immediate wake of Columbine, and a lot of it entered the "common knowledge" surrounding the massacre. The infamous "She Said Yes" story of Cassie Bernall and the story of the "Trench Coat Mafia" being the most infamous examples.

From what I understand of the actual information, Harris was dunked on a fair bit, but it may not have been as bad as initially reported and Harris's own writings aren't fully reliable what with him being a budding narcissistic psychopath and all.

I get the impression that Dylan Klebold was more of a nobody more than anything else, the kind of person who wasn't part of the popular kids but wasn't a real outcast either. If he got dunked on, it probably had to do with his ties to Harris.

There was a gay little span in education for a while where you were told "everyone's got issues and problems not apparent to the eye. Be nice to someone you don't know once a day, you never know if it will save a life!" and while it was awfully lame and super gay, it was miles better than the current system of finding at least 3 reasons to hate people if they meet the white/male matrix points needed. I haven't been in the public school system for a while, but it was kinda icky seeing high schoolers go back to ostracizing the weird incel kids that wasn't just bullying (which is rad) but it was that left-leaning, holier-than-thou attidude baked in. It's just endless shitting on the undesireables with no offer to help or repair them.
It's like they want to breed more 'incels' at all these levels when you see the assemblies focusing on women's issues taking up three hours every month. For the freaks and geeks who lack the social capital to make femfriends they get lectured by their mandatory diversity credit classes and forced inclusion activities only to be told an endless loop of "whoa there bucko, you're the issue here. These poor, poor girls around you are getting preferential treatment, fewer responsibilities, and less expectations in performance than you because YOU'RE the one abusing them and keeping them down." Then after getting through college they get to this workplace where they do the same victimized women narrative and special program parade while seeing articles about mysogyny. It's just so obviously counter to anything actually based in prevention.
Sometimes I wonder if there's a true, concerted, knowing effort at some level to breed strawman opposition instead of a ghost. I don't think there are that many nazi's around today, but the actions we see sure seem intent on making it seem like they're everywhere. If it weren't for the media constantly bringing them up no one would even know about them and they'd fade back into historical nerdery.
