I thought this post deserved a serious and well thought out answer. If it sounds at some level that our sympathy for the old is relatively low comparatively to everyone else in this situation, that's because it is. When bad things happen you often have to pick the least bad outcome. In this case making sure the economy survives and the kids can keep going to school is a lot more important than keeping a few extra geriatrics alive.

People die and the young dying is a far greater tragedy than the old. It's just true, in the event of shootout the grandad should shield the father who shields his son because in that very order is the priority of life and continued existence of the species. It's not out of contempt for the old in fact I believe that the old deserve a level of deference and respect in a way we don't pay to people under 21. However, when it comes to whose life is more important. The answer is the young.

Now the mere preservation of (a) life itself is not the end goal per se. The end goal is to keep society functioning. In order for society to function the children need an education so when they become adults they can actually read and be productive adults; the adults need to be engaged in economic activity and need to be in a position to bequeath that economic opportunity to the next generation.

The lockdowns have crippled the economy, destabisiling households and crushed capitol needed for investment. The schooling system has been put on hold disrupting the education and socialisation of young. Children need to be brought up in structured environment so by the time they become adults they will be able to cope and practice self discipline. A disruption to this chain will lead to problems further down the line.

Then there is the immediate affect these lockdowns are having on the community as a whole. With an increasing number of people going into poverty there will be more deaths due substance abuse, poorer nutrition and suicide. In my country it has been estimated that for every 1% increase in the unemployment rate there is a corresponding 10,000 extra deaths per annum.

So in short, it's better a few more geriatrics die than suffer the misery both short and long term of sustained lockdown. We could better than nothing at all, but between lockdown and nothing at all I pick nothing at all.

I appreciate the reply. To a certain degree, I agree with what you said. Hard lockdowns are rather harsh and should only used sparringly and for short durations (if at all). Locking down an entire region indpendently of the situation, locking it down too long and so on, that's bullshit. Germany had a "lockdown light" and now locked down for a few weeks over the holidays until the 10th (looks like they'd extend it, though)... I'm not a hundred percent on board with this, for the same reasons that you mention, though I'm more willing to accept a lockdown if it protects old folk and those with a bad predisposition to be more vulnerable to the chink stink. There has to be a balance between protecting vulnerable people and protecting the livelihood of everybody else. To over-dramaticise a little: If the lockdowns turn the entire nation into a Mad Max post-apocalyptic wasteland, the lives we saved along the way won't matter.
I'm just fascinated how blunt some people are with their disregard towards the well-being of older folks. It's not just them being pragmatic about their priorities, it oftentimes sounds outright psychopathic - certainly something that we have mocked on this site, when a lolcow showed the same kind of disregard for fellow people.

That being said, I do think lockdowns serve a certain goal, even for younger people, since I believe that the lethality would rise significantly, even amongst younger people, if ICUs are overburdened and are forced to choose who'll get ventilation and who doesn't. That should be prevented by some measures (though locking down for months on end isn't the be-all-end-all solution for the reasons you stated). While I firmly believe that the situation is as dire as the experts make it out to be, I think we can only really see that after a year or so, when we can tell how high the excess mortality actually was and who was the most affected. So yeah, maybe in 2 or 3 years, we look back and find out that we really lost our shit over a flu, maybe we'll find that the price we paid was justified... we can't really tell before it's over.

Though in order to really look at the situation, one must avoid falling for the "self-defeating prophey" fallacy. In Germany, a couple of people argue that the coof is not so bad, after all, it hasn't been a total desaster here, but they overlook the many steps taken to prevent exactly that desaster. It's like deciding not to use the smartphone while driving to prevent accidents, and when you reach your destination savely, you go "huh, nothing happened, so next time, it's okay to write tweets while driving." So, if the coof turns out to have caused a low number of deaths, is that due to the coof not being dangerous or is it thanks to countermeasures?
Differentiating between those two options will be hard and the sad thing is:

Whatever opinion people have right now about this topic will not change much, unless something really drastic happens. Those that think the coof was just a mild flu will go to their graves thinking just that. Those that thought it was super-ebola-aids 2.0 will go to their graves thinking just that.

Edit: Though it's kind of ironic. Many measures against the coof would not be necessary, if more people would act more responsibly. If the spread was slowed down by sensible actions (such as avoiding large groups of people, wearing a mask, washing hands and so on), harsh lockdowns might not be necessary or at least their duration would be shorter.

@Rich Evans Apologist was a bit more blunt with his comment, but... what speaks against this being regular ballots? As he ironically pointed out, these ballots are bought in bulk and then shipped around. Once the election is over, they serve no purpose and get destroyed. Without identification, they are useless and wasn't it the accepted opinion amongst some people that the fraud had to have happened electronically, since any physical meddling would not be feasible?

Without context, this looks like the printer that supplied the ballots for the election just had a couple palettes of ballots to spare - and given that you always have to calculate with breakage and so on, it's not really a mystery why there's so many.
