It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

Khamenei: Women in Animations Must Wear Hijab

Women in animations must wear hijab, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced in a new fatwa published by the Fiqh (“Islamic Jurisprudence”) Telegram channel in answer to an inquiry.

“Is observing hijab necessary for characters in animated films (three-dimensional paintings that come from the artist’s mind)?” Khamenei was asked. “Although wearing hijab in such a hypothetical situation is not required per se, observing hijab in animation is required due to the consequences of not wearing hijab,” he replied. In other words, the artist is free to imagine women without hijab but he cannot present them to the viewers.

It remains to be seen how this fatwa will affect animated movies and series shown in Iran. Since the establishment of the Islamic Republic, some clergymen and religious groups have opposed showing foreign movies and series in which women appear without hijab and believe they encourage women to discard the head covering. However, not all clergymen believe that hijab is mandatory on the screen.
Where's the Islamic content rating when you need it?

Uhh, I don't know where to put this but YouTuber John Ward made a video of an "interview" of Joe Biden by Dave Letterman from 2007 when he was running for president where he tells a story about how he got arrested when he was 21 for illegally entering the capital building, entering the senate chamber, and sitting in the presiding officer's chair.

Italy landslide drags 200 coffins into the sea near popular tourist resort

Landslide in the cemetery of Camogli village sent 200 coffins into the sea - Vigili del fuoco-DAPRESS / SplashNews.com
Hundreds of coffins were carried away and plunged into the seas after a landslide on Tuesday hit a graveyard in a village near Genoa.

Firemen and rescuers in Camogli, a cliff-side village near the northern city of Genoa, scrambled to rescue the coffins, many of which were damaged or destroyed after falling on the rocks about 50 metres below the cemetery.

Only a dozen coffins out of the more than 200 swept away had been recovered as of Tuesday afternoon.

Images of open and partially destroyed coffins floating in Camogli’s green waters were published by most Italian media and were shared widely on social media.

The landslide appears to have been caused by coastal erosion, aggravated by severe storms that hit the northern Liguria region in recent years. It also destroyed two chapels at the Camogli cemetery.

Genoa prosecutors have opened an investigation into the disaster, examining recent building works in the area, which they say could have played a role in the landslide.

Local news reports suggested that the slope at Camogli had started to suffer from instability problems after a major storm in 2018. Works to mitigate the instability on parts of the cliff are ongoing.

Families who lost their relatives' remains at sea will be offered support, Camogli's mayor said.

“We’ll do our best to identify the bodies also using DNA tests,” said Francesco Olivari. “We are also planning to create a team that would provide psychological support to those people, who are understandably under shock.”

Blow for smugglers as Hamburg makes Europe's biggest cocaine seizure

1614190917920.png
Customs officers in Germany say they have made Europe's largest-ever seizure of cocaine. They found more than 16 metric tonnes in containers that had arrived from Paraguay, authorities in Hamburg announced on Wednesday. The drugs were discovered on February 12 during a search of five shipments that had been flagged as suspicious. The cocaine was found in more than 1,700 tin cans that had been filled with putty, Hamburg's customs office said.

Over the following days, German and Dutch authorities investigated further and another 7.2 metric tonnes of cocaine were seized on Sunday in the Belgian port of Antwerp. The total haul of more than 23 tonnes would have had a street value of "several billion euros", officials said. On Wednesday, Dutch authorities arrested a 28-year-old man from the town of Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam, who is suspected of being responsible for the shipments.

"With this blow against organised narcotics crime ... the German customs have once again impressively demonstrated their clout," said Rolf Bösinger, Germany's State Secretary for Customs at the Federal Ministry of Finance. Berlin has also thanked the "exemplary cooperation" of European partners in the operation.

(Personal opinion) : I think Europe's crime rate is going through the roof. As you can tell drug traffickers are getting more and more cocky with their shipments, and thats because police and border control are underfunded and a joke to any illegal goods traficker who isn't an idiot. But hey, Israel needs that money more than we do :tomgirl:

Archaeologists uncover ancient ceremonial carriage near Pompeii

Archeologists uncover an ancient ceremonial carriage near Pompeii
ROME (Reuters) - Archaeologists have unearthed a unique ancient-Roman ceremonial carriage from a villa just outside Pompeii, the city buried in a volcanic eruption in 79 AD.

The almost perfectly preserved four-wheeled carriage made of iron, bronze and tin was found near the stables of an ancient villa at Civita Giuliana, around 700 metres (yards) north of the walls of ancient Pompeii.

Massimo Osanna, the outgoing director of the Pompeii archaeological site, said the carriage was the first of its kind discovered in the area, which had so far yielded functional vehicles used for transport and work, but not for ceremonies.

"This is an extraordinary discovery that advances our understanding of the ancient world," Osanna said, adding that the carriage would have "accompanied festive moments for the community, (such as) parades and processions".

The culture ministry called it "a unique find, without any precedent in Italy".

Pompeii, 23 km (14 miles) southeast of Naples, was home to about 13,000 people when it was buried under ash, pumice pebbles and dust as it endured the force of an eruption equivalent to many atomic bombs.

About two-thirds of the 66-hectare (165-acre) ancient town has been uncovered. The ruins were not discovered until the 16th century and organised excavations began in about 1750.

"Pompeii continues to amaze us with its discoveries and it will do so for many years, with 20 hectares still to be dug up," said Culture Minister Dario Franceschini.
A rare documentation of Greco-Roman life, Pompeii is one of Italy's most popular attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mumsnet was trending on our twitter so I clicked to find out why and saw this, thought it would give some of you a chuckle. Mumsnet is kiwi farms apparently. Hopefully this is the right board to post it on.

They're not entirely wrong, I've said in the past that Mumsnet is essentially becoming mainstream boomer Kiwi Farms.

They've always been gossips, but ever since they've taken up arms against troons they've started archiving shit and trawling through social media. Sometimes I wonder if a couple of users here are acting in the same capacity as the CIA in some godforsaken shithole in the middle of the Cold War.
