Enbies always seem fat, ugly or both. There's no effort to actually look good. It's like the "Roll out of bed after a meth fueled weekend" look. I don't think they are trying to look attractive at all though. I think they are attempting to make some sort of statement that looks absolutely retarded to anyone outside of their bubble.

The ones from the 80s were overwhelmingly men, who did it either as a fashion statement, or because they were a homosexual.
The ones from today are overwhelmingly women, who do it to claim genderspecial status and get asspats among their left-wing peers, or because it's a way for them to cope with being touched as a child.
