Is the big-I-Internet becoming "the dark web"? - Hear me out on this one.

Actually, I am amazed that so many people do not know about the existence of Invidious as it has a nicer player than YouTube, ads are blocked as it uses different APIs, and it can play audio only, as well as in the background on mobile and most instances let you download the video or just the audio directly from the video page...and it also bypasses age or region blocks.

Plus, why do not more Android mobilefags use the NewPipe app to watch videos? It does everything YouTube Vanced used to do but better, as well as faster loading, background play, audio-only and downloading options, and no ads by default as well as no age or region blocks.
I remember hearing about them in passing but forgot to write it down to check it out later, I should do that when I get back from work. Thanks!

@OutInTheRain and @HahaYes

This is why I think Null was on to something when he said the era of free speech on the internet is over, as most people will choose convenience and do what their friends do instead of seeking out or doing things on the internet that they have never seen or done before.

It will only get worse with the zoomers, and Generation Alpha, as they have never known an internet or operating systems that were not walled gardens and so therefore can never miss what they have never had...and will probably regard millennials who are rapidly-reaching middle-age as being irrelevant and old-fashioned when they talk about the days of the "classic" internet, assuming that most millennials will even care anymore as they work their dead-end jobs or fuss over their kids if they have reproduced.
Its exactly the kind of thing you're describing that led to the simpsons rightfully pointing it out with scenes like this
Nobody ever believes it'll happen to them until it inevitably does. Its a lesson the current younger generations really dropped the ball on. Zoomers and alphas have yet to realize that they're going to be the boomers they look down on sooner than they think

Holy shit, thought it was just me. Built a new PC a couple weeks ago, and at first I thought it was just that I was on a fresh install (don't have a YouTube Account). Usually only takes a couple days for stuff I like to filter back in, but 2 weeks later I'm still getting recommended shit like Anthony Fantano because I've listened to music a lot I guess? About half of it is clickbait low-effort meme shit, and mainstream Twitch people.
For some reason, youtube shorts is giving me videos of hasidic jews dancing and shit and old videos of "the rebbe"? Is this the algorithm trying to make me unnotice things or what?

Here...

You just select what instance you want from the list for Invidious and each instance is like a frontend for YouTube hosted on a different server.

NewPipe can be downloaded from a FOSS app called F-Droid which is basically an open-source alternative to the Google Play store, but I think that NewPipe is on the Google Play store now as well.

Youtube shorts just gives me videos of technology, video games, birds, rats, reptiles, prehistoric stuff, cool bugs, screaming baby bunnies, borzoi, wolfdogs, and pallas cats. Other than the screaming baby bunnies, I like this.

Here's a baby beaver having a tantrum. Thanks, Algo.

Does it allow playing a little screen on the side while I browse, like vance still does?

Yep. There's no reason _not_ to use it.

I haven't used it yet, but doing a bit of research. Is it true it doesn't play playlists, shorts and livestreams? Sounds like there's a couple of reasons not to use it.

You can play playlists on it as well as make and save your own.

I have had no problem playing shorts, but livestreams can be a bit hit or miss depending on the stream.

Holy shit newpipe is the worst app I ever tried. It started with some furry porn ad and then it wouldnt even close. Eventually I got past it and it didnt work anyways.

I had to try something new because vanced stopped working. But revanced was a better alternative.

Strange. I am using it on a de-Googlefied device, so maybe it behaves differently on a non-factory OS, but where did you see the ad? I see no ads on videos when using it.

I installed my version of NewPipe from F-Droid, so it could also be a matter of where you downloaded it from. This is the first time I have heard of anything like this happening with NewPipe, so I am curious about how common this is.

You clearly downloaded the furry-themed fork Zoopipe.
Got an app with the same name from the app store. Maybe it was a fake? I dunno. It had a lot of downloads. Revanced is working fine though.

I hate how social networks now often hide content from unregistered users. You wanna look at the images that a certain account posted on Twitter? You need to register(fortunately, you can use Nitter for now, but I don't know how long it'll last, given that Musk decided to make the Twitter API pay-to-use). You wanna read more than one answer on Quora? Register. You wanna look at a Pinterest image in its full size? Register. Etc, etc.
Web apps that completely hide their content, such as Discord and Slack, are even worse.
Even alt-tech platforms follow this trend, e.g: Rumble won't let unregistered users read comments.
