Is using adblock the same as piracy?

Lol, so it turns out that Linus "Adblock is piracy" Sebastian has been using a free version of OCCT in his videos. The issue is that version is free for non-commercial use only. So by using the free version to rack in additional dollars to his multi-million dollar account he was essentially pirating the software, while at the same time lecturing people that adblock is piracy therefore it's bad and you should feel bad.

And of course a video from our favorite technician from New York:

At this rate we'll need a "Linus Sebastian / Linus Media Group" thread.

Including LMG is a good idea, as a few of his dickriders with their own LMG/Floatplane channels are just as cow-like (if not moreso).

I'd write an OP myself, but I'd probably run out of monitors before I'd get it finished, mainly because monitors usually don't like being thrown out the window.

Disappointed my ass. I guarantee you if nobody said anything they would have kept using that shit without buying the license. Also the ardent defenders or linus cuck tips are fucking full of shit about it not being clear on the website about licensing. Theres a giant fucking purchase button at the top of the fucking web page. I wear glass & practically fuck up my eyes trying to deep throat my monitor & even I can spot it.

Edit-

Even the fucking archived version of the website back from 2013 has the fucking button. It's just labeled order instead of purchase but it's the same fucking thing. You can even see in the little news section on the archived site that it literally says "Pro licensing updated." Here look for yourselves.

Linus is a hypocritical piece of shit & his retarded ass fanboys deserve to watch their gpu's melt.

To be fair, I did something similar at work. I used software that had a free version for non-comercial use only because I was in a hurry. To get paid version i would need to write ticket to IT department and then wait for them to process it – during the first covid wave and while more than half of IT was sick at 200 + people company. It took several day during normal times. I agree with Louis about employees doing shit without employers knowledge, but LMG is not that big and it was him working with that software. I try to avoid piracy due to mi line of work, because it would be hypocrytical of me to pirate content while relying on people buying things that I help to make. I always try to donate at least small amount of money to developer of free software that i like to use. On the other hand fuck Adobe, Autodesk and their subscriptions – you pay for the same broken shit every month and they are not able to fix shit that they themselves broke half a year prior.

AAAHHHH!! I tried to forget about autodesk. Maya was already such a piece of shit but god dammit if 3ds MAx wasn't so much fucking worse. The worst part is maya is like industry standard when it comes to game development apparently. Makes me so glad blender is gaining more traction. Fuck autodesk. Also fuck adobe & their cc bullshit. Bring back cs6 styled photoshop.

Everyone that I worked for requires 3DS MAX because it's industry standard. I was stuck for a while at 2018 version for duration of the project (due to compatibility with company plugins n shieet) and it was nightmare. It was the worst version i have ever worked with – basic function like cut was not only broken but also caused crashes when autosaving. FUCKING CUT IS BASIC OPERATION. Also fuck them for killing softimage. And the Adobe bullshit is even worse - I can do everything I need in cs6 and there is only few non essential features in CC version that i would like to have, but I don't need them.

Here's Linus' response to him pirating OCCT:
Linus here.

First and foremost, I'm sorry for any upset we caused by using OCCT without paying for a professional license. I've gone ahead and picked up a pro license to cover our use.

The truth is I had no idea OCCT was a paid software. There is a donation prompt in the application, but otherwise no indication that I should have been using a paid version.
Ignorance doesn't excuse our sloppy approach to software licensing here, though. The simple fact is we pirated your software (which as some of you realize I never said we were perfect about, and in fact have pointed out times when my own ethics aren't bothered by it, but whatever) but hopefully our purchase of a paid license will allow us to put this behind us.

There are some other aspects of your post that I could probably type out a longer reply to - like the insinuation that (even if we wanted to) LTT could somehow destroy your OCCT business, or that we don't reply to outreach (I searched our public email and we only have two emails containing the characters OCCT, and neither of them are from you), and the fact that honestly I've got a little bit of whiplash right now from how abruptly this went from "thanks for the shout-out" to "I'm upset enough to write a novel on reddit about it".

Most devs recognize that our use of their software is closer to educational use than it is to commercial use and don't mind us using their software for free if we are demonstrating how to use it and showcasing it to potential customers on the channel. Based on this Twitter post, I assumed you felt the same way. I guess you don't.

But assumptions lead to disasters, and we absolutely should have reached out. Hopefully you can understand how the error occurred and we can put this behind us.

LMAO at "Most devs recognize that our use of their software is closer to educational use than it is to commercial use and don't mind us using their software for free if we are demonstrating how to use it and showcasing it to potential customers on the channel". Literally saying that "it's ok for me to steal your software because I pay you in exposure". Also, OCCT is a stability testing/benchmarking tool; they probably used it all the time behind the scenes and making one video about the tool doesn't grant you a license to use it for free whenever you want. I also wonder if the dev didn't really care until Linus went on his holier-than-thou anti-piracy rant and he decided to teach the hypocrite a lesson.

Linus is getting destroyed on Twitter.

Wow, what a retard. If he said that it was mistake and he's sorry nobody would care. Now he revealed him self as a whiny stupid hypocrite.

A shitton of replies are just whiteknighting Linus, like he's just a small YouTuber that didn't do anything wrong. And Jayz is a fellow shit-tier tech YouTuber so of course he's gonna defend daddy Linus.

EDIT: I did a tiny bit of digging for fun. Linus Media Group is a registered business in Canada since 2012, so that directly implies they are generating profit and pay taxes, so they can be held liable for copyright laws. Link

And since LMG clearly is a commercial company and their videos generate revenue, that means that according to section 38.1 of Act C-42 the OCCT dev could sue Linus and demand up to 20,000 CAD in damages per violation. Link

Linus should be fucking glad that the OCCT dev has no balls to actually stand up for his rights, because otherwise Linus would be in some legal shit. I hope that if another case like this pops up, Linus won't be able to weasel out of the issue by "paying in exposure" and will actually feel what it's like to be an incompetent CEO.

There's now in-browser DRM that you would need to somehow circumvent or break its encryption. An example is Spotify. There is no way to, say, download a JRE podcast episode unless the official player allows this.
Isn't it still possible to manually re-record it by sending the analog audio to Line In (or maybe another soundcard) and recording the input from it?
I was re-recording audio CDs this way back when home Internet access was still an uncommon thing.

Linus can go fuck himself with a big stick, he's been pumping shit for years and he knows it.

Also while on the subject, has anyone got any info about him trying to suck up to AvE to try and give him a computer or something and then get him to start posting videos to floatplane, I like AvE from a technical POV especially his older videos but I'm not a fan of his newer stuff but he's always been very anti-shill and independent and I respect that.

They always make the user experience worse, and some websites become completely unusable without a blocker.
Exactly. Here's a good example of what a typical news website looks like without adblockers:

Just what kind of niggercattle one must be to tolerate all this?

Better yet Daily Mail if you visit it (I recommend not visiting at all) with minimal add blocking it look fairly clean, without my god it's not just eye rape it's eye rape that gives you cancer aids.

You can, much like how you can screen record any show on any streaming service, but that's a lot more work than just saving a file and slapping it on your phone. It's too much work for most, and I'm sure tons of people out there are totally unaware that you can just plug an aux cable into your phone's headphone jack, and then plug that into your PC as a microphone, and record straight into Audacity.
