I'm typing this out right now with a keyboard with little lines all over it, and you're inputting those lines into your brains and getting actual meaning from it. The meaning of this sentence does not mean anything else aside from the meaning it is conveying. For example, we all agree that "gesichte" doesn't mean anything and it's not a real word. But what makes that string of characters any different than any other string of characters? And, moreover, you can sound out individual characters and form complete words. Why does A make the "A sound"?
How do I know if that, as I am typing this out, some other person will read this and get a totally different meaning from it? The only convention that makes us agree that specific words mean specific things is society. If everyone had a different meaning for every word then we'd be screwed. We wouldn't even be able to communicate ideas. We all have to agree that reality is this way in order for our entire world to function.
Writing was invented a long time ago. So long that evolution has probably adjusted our mind so that we instinctively pick up the language of our given family. Arguing online seems dumb when you really think about and realize all the specific mechanisms facilitating our discourse. Reading and writing is just a very basic level, what about the internet, computers, plastic, metal, motion sensors, and much more that goes into it. Why do I sit here and read about the lives of other people when there's an entire world which is beyond my comprehension?
