Damn that bald head jumped massively between episodes. The review itself was okay, in the end looking at different versions of Doom is pointless when they are pretty identical once they went to the next generation of consoles. Some jokes landed alright.
The whole tirade about different ports overstayed its welcome and was too full of made up examples. Ditto why do two parts where the nerd "fights" the game and stick to either the BFG or donning the Doom Armour.

I kinda wish James would have stayed with the helmet from the start until the end.

The baldness is just getting worse and worse for him. And it didn't really feel like a Halloween episode. Even last few years felt more like Halloween episodes. Why didn't he have the "spooky" set he uses for Halloween and the Doomguy costume most of the time?

I think for the past few years he's been using Toppik or some other synthetic spray-on hair to hide his balding as much as possible. I remember someone posted a video of him sat at a restaurant around 5 years ago and he looked about as bad as he does now, but in the videos that came out around that time he looked better.

If he wants to keep the "iconic" Nerd look, he needs a transplant or a toupee, or just anything because that forehead is getting really distracting now.

Tbh I found the Doom video pretty enjoyable, but he should have focused on weird ports and mods more instead of just mentioning them.

I feel Doom Ports is better for a second video. Doom 2 has some really weird levels and AVGN's reactions to the nonsense in Doom 2 would have been more interesting to me.

Felt like he skipped over far too much in that one - yes PS1 contains Doom 2, but only certain levels, the geometry was changed and the Arch Vile removed. So whilst it is still the best contemporary console port, it's not "near perfect". The Saturn version also doesn't have "random slowdown", it runs at about 10fps and is virtually unplayable, but in both versions the music is awesome. Doom 64 is great as well, finally getting the recognition it deserves after the remaster. Felt like he played most of the ports for about 5 minutes.

Thought the Doom video was meh overall. A lot of those versions hes covered in varying detail over the years. IMO comes off as kind of low effort to focus on such a topic and only spending 1-2 minutes at most on each particular version.

He should have branched out into doing interviews with the people who made the shitty games he played over the years or do in depth videos about subjects hes touched on. Think something like the Gaming Historian(really great channel) and the content he puts out.

Instead he continued trying to be the nerd but due to the constraints on modern youtube its almost all pure cringe because old avgn humor isnt allowed in 2022 and all the while his videos are written by 75 iq idiots who know nothing about the games avgn is all about. Also doesnt help anyone who was a fan of early AVGN is in their late 20s at the earliest so the AVGN persona is kinda played out.

At this point, there are much better youtubers who cover games now than AVGN. He could've just kept the name while going along with the trends or being his own thing and dropping the angry persona altogether. He has been enjoyable to watch when it's just him talking about anything which he's passionate or knowledgeable about.

The problem though is that as we've come to find out, video games aren't his thing so to do that genuinely would be hard for him and any attempt would come off as forced. If he was still consistently making great videos then his age wouldn't matter and people would still watch him just like they did during his first several years on youtube

Pat Contri’s podcast is alright, it’s at its best when they cover lolcows like Tommy Tallarico, and at its worse when Ian gets triggered by someone not being woke. Its been better lately than it has been the past few years, too. Pat’s got a big ego and enough tenacity on his own to keep his channel afloat all these years, despite never getting very big.

Yeah, I keep up with the podcast actually. I don't really like it too much when they obsess over cows, cause to me they are cows themselves. Pat's latest Punk video is horrific though. Holy shit, I think that's him shirtless at the end with the mask, wtf.

ETA: My favorite is when Ian has to hawk the sponsor stuff. He looks like a condemned prisoner everytime he has to do any 'capitalism' related thing.

It was clear he wasnt really playing those games himself considering almost all the footage of pc doom was captured from unity doom by some game journalist, while a moment with romero easter egg was taken from random youtube video. Ofc he aint gonna know what the fuck is the difference in map geometry between ps1 and pc doom.

Just watching the video again, and I don't think any of the ports got past the first few levels of the game. I think the furthest he got in any of the ports was about half way though episode 1. That's assuming he even played it, which as we know is a miracle and not something he does much anymore. Video wasn't terrible, but it was pretty meh since it shot past the ports way too fast.
