I've met James. The dude is the chillest dude ever in real life.

I dunno, when I was meeting him at the convention I went to, he seemed really quiet, not that excited, and basically responded to everything I said with a "Whatever, next!" Then again, this was later in the day, so he was probably tired at the time.

I've always loved Monster Madness. It's cool learning new things about old horror movies.

I also like that James is very reasonable about talking about his opinion on movies he like. He's always very cool about it, "If you like this that's cool, if you don't that's cool too." He doesn't have an undertone of smug superiority about his opinions like some other reviewers.

Without a doubt the best long time youtuber so far, it's nice to see someone who has been doing what he's been doing for like 12 years and still not only enjoy it but also avoid becoming a human embarrassment like so many others. I'll go through patches of time where I wont watch any of his videos but then I'll binge a bunch of them and always enjoy it, truly an example of how to internet and not let the internet destroy you.

Monster Madness has made itself part of my Halloween routine and I wouldn't have it any other way.

guys. lets not forget about the ghostbusters controversy in 2016 that james was part of.

James stated in the video that he looked at the trailer and thought it was awful and made a video that he doesn't want to see and review it.

at that time, many feminists and SJWs began calling him sexist and harassed him alot with insults and threats. they even harassed his wife and kids, with some demanding her to divorce him.

There is so much drama that needs to be properly documented over the AVGN channel:
  1. Mike posting his dick online and all the memes and subreddit drama/splitting that came from it
  2. Mike Matei in general, dude is a milkmine. Check out this archived gem.
  3. More recently, there seems to be a very intimate partnership with a company called Screenwave Media. I know very little about them but it seems that they're pushing Cinemassacre/AVGN into a bigger budget/monetized direction. I have no idea if they've been hired by James to help with the channel or if they've offered themselves to leech on the channel. They're not very well received, with a general attitude of "who the fuck are these guys, why are they here?" (They're also not funny. When there's a group video, James is clearly the only talented one there, which makes it a cringey watching experience.)
  4. As stated already, James' review of the Ghostbusters reboot was maybe the most controversial piece of that entire shitshow (no small feat, considering how tame and down-to-earth the review was in fact).
James is a literal based God for managing to not let even the slightest bit of drama affect the AVGN main series - which has had its ups and down but as many here have stated already, is still producing quality content, which is unheard of when it comes to a YouTube channel / Internet celebrity, over ten years past its "prime". Personally,

There's a lot of cow potential in Cinemassacre. Mike is a given. I don't know much about the Screenwave Media guys but they're definitely worth looking into - not only they're pretty lolsy in a cowlike sort of way but they're probably going to stick around for a while, which translates to a lot of future potential.

Although AVGN still has a lot of fans, there really isn't much of a community around him, which is why none of this is properly documented anywhere. I think that's because in his "prime" we didn't have Discord, reddit or similar community-building platforms.

Yeah Mike being a lolcow doesn't surprise me. He comes across very awkwardly in some of the vids.

James though, I gotta give the guy props. The Ghostbusters drama would have driven other guys over the edge, but he handled it as well as anyone could in that he just plain didn't react to the drama. He didn't cave, he didn't back down, he didn't call anybody out, and he didn't even take the video down. He just went about his business, didn't get sucked into the mad house, and he came out of it smelling like a rose (and somewhat vindicated since GB16 bombed and was also bad, like he predicted).

Wait are those the fat fucks in the Rental Reviews?

Yes. Ryan founded Screenwave media, the same Ryan that appears with Mike sometimes. Ryan then made those guys be a larger part of the channel at some point when Screenwave became Ryan's job which leads us to now, with the Screenwave Media guys doing shit like writing the ads (James gives no fucks about said ads) and some special effects (Tony mentions that in one of their videos). James wanted to start a new show (Rental Reviews) and those guys in there are the Screenwave Media crew he wanted in the front because James didn't want to do this shit on his own, Mike didn't want to do it at all and the Screenwave guys knew they'd get shit on for it. Sauce for most of this is Kieran so might not be 100% believable but it's better than nothing, maybe. He also gives some information on the Bootsy disappearence, it was about money after all and it's considered a "sensitive subject".
