I m kinda surprised because in some old screw attack era, BTS video he explains his work flow with like a script how the footage is saved, how its backed up. And shit man to crank out 2 episodes, I think anyone watching that would see that the dude isnt a cow.

part of what comes through with AVGN is that you had men born in the 1980s chill talk about when they rented games at the video store, or playing with ninja turtles. When you in your late 40's its kinda sad.

If james wanted to make movies he coulda just made outlines, found or hired an editor/writer. Then sell it.

Looking back on when I met him with my friends about 10 years ago, I can see it now. He only kept to a handful of topics and kept conversations short then left while Mike did much more socializing. At the time I assumed it was because a ton of people were there for the signing/photos and he was just a busy guy or shy. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, I just didn’t notice that he was “masking” as autists call it, but in hindsight it is undeniable. He does a good job of controlling himself in public, I’m assuming that is from the schooling. I never assumed there was anything wrong with him, I chalked it up to his YouTube persona/comedy style, but it all makes total sense now that I’m seeing this and the autobiography.

Well I’ll give James this; he’s pretty decent at masking his autism in off the cuff vids. Not saying the podcast was good or he should do that but I’m impressed with how much he’s accomplished in life despite being neurodivergent. Is his book cringe? Update: the book has been edited on the Kindle version. The infamous "forward" error has been corrected. Either James combed over the entire document looking for errors or he got Justin to do it or possibly paid someone to fix it. If the editing was left to Justin or another Screenwave crony then James should be pissed at whoever it was.

I'd be interested if the formatting was addressed but I doubt the 4th grade level writing has been fixed at all.

Eh... my version preserved all the fuck-ups, it's more charming that way (the only thing I did was separating certain paragraphs to make it easier on the eyes).

A few of my impressions after reading:

• It's pretty light reading, it's over very fast, but it manages to be boring anyway.
• The bulk of the book is about autistic detail about his home movies and mushy family stuff.
• People like Kyle, Bootsy and Mike are featured in the book, but they "suddenly" disappear at a certain point. No juicy details here beyond how they met. He focuses more on his dorm experience, for some ungodly reason.
• Screenwave is barely a footnote, if people wanted meme-worthy details, they're not here.
• Early AVGN years are blown past really quickly in favor of stories of his first editing jobs (including one with a "Donald Trump-like boss" I'm not joking).
• We know by now that he's not a gamer, but I find odd how games don't factor at all in the book.
• Overall, I think he tried to come across as a underdog with a dream, but only manages to look like a selfish, egocentric and entitled autist.
