TheCinemassacreTruth subreddit is full of such a-logs that if you even so much as say something vaguely positive about James or Mike such as "I liked their videos in my youth" you'll get downvoted lol
They're the reason I found the farms. Jesus those people have no chill about James does. Same with Spoony subreddit.
It's weird. James for me is basically a guy I have some sort of nostalgia for because his videos were from a period where the internet looked wide and open and full of endless possibilities and anything could happen and if I click enough links it'll take me to the gumdrop kingdom..... But I never actually was that huge an AVGN fan.
From Lolcow content perspective I mean, we're in his thread yet people sometimes talking about other people like Spoony who have his own thread. James really slow down his content in 2022 so there is not much to discuss.

So to be on-topic..... I'm thinking about picking up the two AVGN games on Switch. Videos make it look like they're fun platformers. But I wanna know what Kiwis thought of them first, just in case they're not as good as they look. Only thing I've heard is the difficulty gets obnoxious due to the one-hit-kill deathblocks.

They're alright old school platformers, some fun moments and overall functional. Plus it's not about depression or have retarded amount of chaining moves.
James is so boring now people talking about Spoony in his thread.
James was never interesting enough for a lolcow status or even internet famous. He is inoffensive and at most can be blamed in lack of passion or not being good as he thinks he is, which is small potatoes. Most of the thread is about the idiots James joined with.

I actually like Celeste, but not enough to want to try out games like Super Meat Boy (Celeste works for me because of its mostly positive nature, while it seems like other superhard games are all about mocking the player... and also because I tend to agree with what speedrunner Punchy once said: "Its the hardest game that anyone can beat." IE its difficult but its not Kaizo or Getting Over It levels of retardation).

One thing I notice about James talk is.... and this is probably a "duh" statement--how much of the discourse is around AVGN specifically. I think the only time anyone discussed his other stuff was that one plagiarism scandal.

That said, Rolfe is just hard to stay mad at. Especially since he still puts out videos like this:

Well, I guess I have a reason to watch Beavis and Butthead Do America now....

They're very bland and generic games.

As for James, the Cinemassacre channel has recently started uploading YouTube shorts. You can't even call it nostalgia baiting, because one of them is from the cat episode he did last year.

That's pathetic. Aren't YT Shorts the equivalent of TikTok videos?

This is like a Boomer trying to stay hip and with the times while at the same time failing to grasp the concept.

Anyone who has ever been to high school has seen it and should empathize with Spoony, but for some reason, the internet doesn't.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna defend his Twitter Pity Party While Refusing To Actually Do Anything era.... I just don't really blame Spoony for falling into that rut. He was essentially railroaded into it.

It's like, I had a friend years back, who had to live with his parents.... because his mom was in a wheelchair, see, and he was helping caretake for her. But he was an adult man, so of course a lot of people heard the "grown man who lives with his parents" part and not the "because he's taking care of his invalid mom" part and just assumed he was some lazy slob.

That's not exactly Spoony's situation, but its similar in that people judging Spoony tend to only hear the part that makes him sound like the asshole without checking to see if he might in some way be justified.
Nigger, Spoony never got over Scarlet. That and Twitter addiction is what caused his downfall.

YouTube's going full retard again and pushing the unholy hell out of shorts. You have to make them in order for your channel to get recommended right now. Even the most respectable channels I watch do them because of this.

Yeah pretty much. That's the work of Screenwave again, trying to keep up with the times like with the failed Cinemassacre Podcast and trying to make the secondary channel a Podcast clips channel.

Youtube is trying to get younger people to keep watching videos on the platform instead of Tiktok. The people running Youtube can't come up with anything new, they just copy other companies like Youtube Memberships=Patreon, Superchats=Twitch Bit Messages, Shorts=Tiktok Videos.

Yeah, some forgettable episodes here and there so i get it when it comes to Youtube-content, but don't forget THE. BOOK. havent had ethe time going through it as a whole via audiobook since James has such a boring voice, i wonder who would've been a better reader for it... a shame the "irate- AVGN" hatchett is since long buried, paying Bores to do a spoofy reading of it could've been something... still waiting for a perfect Hitler-but-in-english AI voice setting XD Imagine the possibilities!

Maybe instead of shorts, Youtube should've made pants.

To add to this, the book is what made it clear in a lot of people's minds that he was a certified autist, but never someone worth milking over like screenwave. The worst thing you can say about James right now is that his videos aren't close to being on par with his contemporaries and that he's gotten lazy due to never having any passion for AVGN like what we had long assumed.

He is still capable of making good videos like with the Earthbound video and Majora's Mask. It's just that they're now few and far between. If I want to see a video on wii shovelware, then I'll put on Scott the Woz. If I want to see a video on Doom then I'll look for GManLives or Modern Vintage Gamer.

I thought 2022 is an okay year for AVGN. Yes we get fewer episode compare to the years before that, but sometimes the less is better imo. Here are my grade for AVGN 2022 from my memory.
1. The Last Ninja - A
2. Contra - A
3. Purr Pals - C
4. Hudson Hawk - didn't watch this one
5. Doom - B+ (could be better tbh)
6. Garfield - B
As for the book, I haven't got the chance to look into it more. But I always find auto-biography to be pretentious as fuck.

The Hudson Hawk video was actually not too bad, and honestly also fills another niche for me: "That movie/game I remember wanting to see as a kid but never getting to but always wondered what it was about and now James tells me so I don't have to spend money." Darkman was like that too.

I still don't know why he thinks of himself as a movie maker.

James walks into a gas station. Does the random person there say, "Hey it's the video game nerd!" or do they say "hey it's that guy who made that shitty black and white movie in his mom's back yard in 1992!"
They say, "OMG It's the guy from Rex Viper!!!"
