The issue wasn’t E.T. Specific, atari in general was producing significantly more games than could have been sold for that Christmas season. Several titles were dug up at the site including Pac Man, Asteroids, and the like. People fail to remember that E.T. actually sold extremely well, but it was just over manufactured along with pac man and the like.
The reason they trashed the games was because Atari went bankrupt and had to liquidate, and no one was there to buy cartridges for the 2600 system, even if it were to flash the carts and put new software on it.

ET probably only sold about 1.5 million copies, which by any metric was a huge flop for such a highly promoted game attached to such a huge blockbuster. Reason being was the bad word of mouth the game got. It only got mixed reviews in what passed for the games journalism of the day. Now yes, 1.5 million probably puts it among the best-selling Atari games, but it was getting outsold by many popular arcade ports (including those you could buy with better graphics on other consoles or computers) and other big games like Pitfall.

Pacman is a better example since the Atari port is famously ass but it's by far the best selling game on the 2600.

So, AVGN Adventures I and II for Switch went on sale for like seven bucks and I took a chance. So far I'm actually liking it, but god damn I wish games still came with manuals because there's a lot of things I'd like to know but there's no convenient way of finding out (and yes, I tried searching online).

Like okay, I found several locations where Shitpickle appears, but like... can I collect him? Does he do anything? What I found online suggests he's just an easter egg and you watch him leave and that's that.

What's the deal with the NES cartridges that spell out NERD? I assume there's a good reason to collect them in each level.

Why is it that I can only have one extra weapon at a time (IE picking up the Glitch Gremlin loses my Beer Keg)? Am I doing something wrong or is this seriously just how the game is?

Sometimes I wonder what is the better fate--Spoony was a star that shone briefly before being overcome by his personal demons, but his body of work still carries a weight and inspires people to this day. AVGN meanwhile maintained steady output but now has people declaring he's jumped the shark and should just allow it to rest.

Classic AVGN was probably the biggest gaming content on youtube at the time; I would not be surprised if at some point the channel was one of if not the most subscribed to channel for gaming stuff during youtube's nascent era. James and Mike codified the "angry reviewer" for video game reviews, which ended up being so popular that it had it's own host of copy cats like the Irate Gamer. Spoony was, franky, just yet another person reviewing games/movies on the internet, even if they were above the par for the time. I think the only people going back to watch Spoony's old stuff are the people who actually remember them trying to remember the good ol' days; no one's happening upon his channel and getting inspired.

If you care to compare them today, Spoony's spent the last like 6 or however many years schizoposting on twitter after grifting a bunch of his fans for a movie that never came out. AVGN, while not as good as it's heyday, at least still exists and occasionally has a pretty good episode every now and then. The AVGN movie also at least came out even if it wasn't that good. I think I know which fate I'd prefer at least.

Big Ryan has made his first public appearance since he ended his podcast with Mike, he appears to be continuing his transition.

Most of the people on the subreddit were making fun of him so the jannies had to shut it down. I believe the mods on there have already said that clowning on Ryan drew the attention of Reddit admins and they were worried it would get the sub shut down.

A few people were comparing him to Chris and there is a bit of a resemblance.

James really likes to do the skits and all that stuff. I'm more, definitely more about the gameplay and like the analogies, that's the part of the show I think's good and funny, y'know.
