So I was reading Chris's paper again, and I think I noticed another error...

I don't know too much about Japanese history so maybe I'm wrong about this, but as far as I understand the above quote does not really describe Japan at any point during the 20th century. Due to gunboat diplomacy, Japan's self imposed isolation from the world ended in the middle of the 19th century. I don't have the book Chris is quoting from, but I suspect that the sentence he quoted refers to Japan prior to the middle of the 19th century rather than "During the wait for the start of [World War II]". Can anyone more knowledgeable than me can share his input and tell me if my conclusions are correct?

Fixed that for you. (Pearl Harbor is pretty bad as far as accuracy goes.) If Chris had watched (and understood) this aforementioned movie, he'd have probably had at least a fairly accurate essay with some relevant information.

Regarding the essay itself, this document appears to be pretty clear evidence Chris was simply incapable of doing (mainstream) high school work while in high school. If high school work was placed before him now, I doubt he would do any better--perhaps worse even. The fact he graduated after putting out work like this lends great support the theory that "they just let him through."

Another potential use for Spanish could have been in the sweetheart search. Now, few (that is, none) of the Latinas I know would be interested in Chris, regardless of his grasp of Spanish, but I think my theoretical point here is clear. Now, this approach hasn't (and won't) work--that's a given--but it's the concept of it I wish to point out.

Ok guys, I give up.

I tired to find that one peice from Watchmen of Rorschachs paper on the Japanese war, where he said and I quote "If we did not bomb japan, more people would have died" as a reverse forshadow to what was coming up in the final chapters. I would have compared young Kovacs school paper vs Chris Chans "Oh, everything went all hunkie dorie in the end!" but... I couldent find the page it was on.

Question: Did Bob ( not Barb, she doesn't count) ever take the slightest interest in his sons academics?
This does not seem to be an insurmountable paper, even for someone like Chris. He had resources: library, the internet, his father, the people at the Korean Church.
Bob was not terribly busy in 1999, and if he felt so inclined, could have helped Chrissun with his essay. So why didn't he?

Did he even have any idea what his son was studying ?Did he just not take any interest in his schoolwork, knowing he could bully the teachers into giving his son a good grade?
I can't help but get the feeling that both his parents were totally checked out, and would take any opportunity not to deal with their son or his problems.

Considering how they let him have whatever toys he wanted and let him become basically a shut in, it sounds like they were willing to just let him do what he wanted as long as it didn't get him/them into trouble. As long as the teachers weren't calling them up about 'Chrissy's behaviour' I don't think they really cared.

Nah, literally any big city. I mean, it's a different scale than, say, Texas. But that's just the difference between there being entire towns that speak spanish (in Texas), compared to just big neighborhoods speaking spanish (in Maryland, where I am).

I know growing up in georgia we had a lot of immigrants from mexico. They came to work farms. If va has any signifigant agriculture, im sure there are tons of em.

I get the impression that their view of having an autistic son was that he was one step away from being a drooling imbecile, and therefore the best they could hope for was to sign him up for disability benefit and keep him away from the special ed system, lest the world find out their secret shame.

Eh, people bring this theory up a lot, but I don't really see it. It was stated before that they were afraid of Chris getting put in an institution, but past that, I don't see much autistic shame in Borb's behavior. Like, Chris was in coping classes and rode the short bus.

This map is based on old data, but my guess is that the 2010 census data would show a slightly darker area around DC, following the same trend as pretty much every other major city. 2010 statistics say that 4.2% of the population of Greene county is "Hispanic or Latino of any race", compared to 1.32% in 2000. /sperg

By the time the US had entered the war, Japan had taken a huge portion of China. They were basically at war with ever country around them except Russia for once. You're right the cloistering period was eariler.

Chris did no research or reading for this paper. This schoolwork leak is proof he was majorly "passed along" in school. I can't believe he has a high school diploma and college degree. Just goes to show those are worthless in the US.
 
Meh, I took Spanish in high school, and I certainly never needed it (in fact, I don't even remember any of it.) I think I just took it as one of those, "classes that look good on your transcripts" type things. I took a semester of Russian in college, too.

What kind of reputation does Manchester High have? After seeing that, I would never send a child of mine there -- especially if he or she were special ed. That's just a disgrace.
