Why is he using raytracing on a 2D game?
That's the thing, I don't believe he does. Lighting appears to be (almost, except the rain/lightning scene, which is easily done by overlaying a lightmap and adding some bloom) entirely static, so you can't actually tell, if it's raytracing or not. From what I've seen, there's not even a day-night cycle in this "game".

Think this dude has some real milk potential. So's that fag who keeps fanfic posting about how he was totally friends with a cow.

Anyway it's just baffling how he can, with a straight face, say "you experienced the game, you paid me, then after some time the playerbase goes away and I get to shut down the game."

Like nigga. WORLD OF WARCRAFT has private servers dude, made by people who do it literally for free, mind you. Counter Strike, anyone? TF2? All games that just give you a server binary and off to the races. And to nobody's shock he's in the middle of development hell devving a game off Kickstarter money he probably funnelled into a whole room full of ferrets.

Yansim eat your heart out. Your replacement is here, and he's a furry gooner.

This appears to be a finished gameplay section. Most videos you'd find are about 5-6 years old, but there's one a few days old, and the LASIK-room is still there, so I'd have to imagine it's intentional. Although, nothing I've seen warrants 8 years of "development".

Radiance cascades sounds really familiar, I'm fairly sure I've read something similar years ago, but this looks recent, since they mention POE2. Looks neat, though, if impractical to use due to low performance. Ironically, something like this could be used to full effect in a low-res 2D (or even a "retro" 3D) game, but that actually requires effort. Hell, I remember there was an "extension" to SSAO (I forget the name though) that faked GI by using the AO samples, which was really easy to implement, yet here we don't even have that.
HBAO has an extension technique similar to what you're describing called HBIL, though it's nowhere near as lightweight as SSAO. I see references to an "SSGI" technique, worth mentioning that in PoE1 they use a technique he called SSVGI which I don't remember much about, but it's also very interesting and works nicely in 2D and games without much depth (i.e. PoE). Both techniques have the upside of having a constant time complexity regardless of how many lights are in the scene, though 50ms for a frame on a 3060 definitely classifies as a heavyweight algorithm.

I'll stop derailing this thread with autistic gamedev talk now

I have my doubts that he is. It doesn't make much sense from the screenshots that have been posted in here, if it is in the game they're not making much good use of it.

PatricianTV is saying that Ross and Accursed Farms is word-filtered on Thor's youtube channel. (A)

Remember TotalBiscuit? He was always one of the most pro-consumer YouTubers on the scene back in the day. Back when he was alive he once had Ross on his podcast and both of them were talking about keeping video games alive, an initiative to which TB was in full agreement. Imagine if TB was alive today. I'm willing to believe that he would destroy Thor for this behaviour.

The fact that he died of ass cancer of all things tells me there is a God and he's a dick.

Why is he using raytracing on a 2D game? I wish I could find it but the SNES had a day night system in harvest moon and breath of fire 2 that looked just as good by changing the screen tint.
Maybe this is why he is taking 10 years to make the game...
A minor example of it at the video timestamp.
I dont remember it, but i recall seeing a rough short where he described how he implemented ray tracing into his engine in an "effective manner" (dubious)
So yeah, it's shitty ray tracing. The game will probably not be finished in any real amount of time since the creation of the game, rather than the final product itself has become a revenue stream through CAHNTENT CREATION.

The curse of YT shorts, like fuck am i digging through thousands of slop clips to find one small thing that autoplayed months ago for a sauce.

It was posted earlier in this thread, here's the clip. Note that he doesn't claim to have built a custom engine, only a custom lighting engine.

Pardon the multi-post.
He was flicking his tongue like a reptile then began throwing his head back, rolling his eyes, and he screeched "I AM THE LIZARD QUEEN!" and that was the moment I knew that if I punched him in the throat I may save lives. Sadly, intrusive thoughts did not win that day.
Supposedly if you beat someone with a phone book it doesn’t leave any bruises. Not sure if that’s just Hollywood make’m’up or if that’s true though.

To be charitable, starting your own company is exactly what you should do in an area you think is not being properly served by the existing companies operating within it.
That's fair. I just find it funny that this guy promotes the message "YOU DON'T NEED A PUBLISHER" to his audience, starts a publishing company and when he gets asked about developers publishing a game with Offbrand he speaks from both sides of his mouth:

Pool's closed, I've found the raytracing:

Looks like a dumb collision check against a sprite, with shadows being obviously wrong, but technically it could be called raytracing.

I've "played" this "game" for about 30 minutes, and I don't think I can handle much more of this. The "story" starts with a kid (?) who loves his talking dog very much, and has an abusive (???) father:

The house is full of garbage, though, so Nick Rekieta here isn't wrong. Also, this could've been another RTX sighting, but the door conveniently closes before you can step into the light.

The writing very quickly devolves into typical millenial trash, of course:

So now you're going around, trying to find the poor pupper, while being helped by the pedo-wizard. You're teleported into the starting room something like 3 times in the first 30 minutes of "gameplay", so the asset/location reuse is strong with this one. I'm sure it's an epic saga that justifies 12 8 years it took to create it, though.
Oh, and there's no "Exit" button in this "game" so you have to Alt-F4 to close it. I can see why the guy thinks releasing a server binary would be too hard.

for anyone else who wants a play, I recommend checking out igg before it's not there. doesnt seem very FUN but it's there.

I wonder if it's gonna be a "it gets good after 40 hours" situation. Indie devs have a habit of starting development with the beginning of the game, so the quality picks up throughout. Though from your screenshots I don't hold out a lot of hope. At least the light coming out of the crack in the door looks neat, but again, nothing that could not have been achieved with an overlay and a mask, probably much faster than doing a bunch of line tests anyway.
