Why are all the opponents of SKG so unable to perform critical thinking? It's incredible how easy it is to negate their arguments.
Initiative: We want to cure cancer, here is how we will go about it!
*Normal person: Sounds good to me, have my signature!
*Dimwit: Actually, we're doing just fine with our current cancer treatments. If you die of cancer, that's like, your problem dude. Who will fall for this? People who listen to this are so naive! Well, I don't have cancer so why should I care?

The wake-up call was the statement from the European lobbyists. I always thought they killed games because they genuinely didn't think people would miss them, due to the rapid gamer culture of "next thing please." But no, they actually want the right to delete them just to save on AWS credits?

It's not even that complicated. Video game companies simply don't want to compete with themselves, and given the nature of the video game industry, it is very likely that their older games are better than their new games. Or rather, they don't have the ability to control the quality variable because they are at the mercy of their retarded employee pool.

If I were a CEO in charge of the next Call of Duty, I'd do everything in my power to eliminate every previous version of CoD from the market- wouldn't even think about it.

They already do everything they can to dissuade people from playing previous CoDs. They're still full price on all storefronts(black ops 2 is 13 years old yet its still $60 on steam). Hackers usually overrun matchmaking when the game gets old enough as well.

At this point it would not surprise me if they just start delisting old games and say "This is to prevent our customers from getting confused"

1: They also profit off of how much of planned obsolesce is taking place
2: Usually Libertarian argument of government overregulation, which is funny cause they're the ones that loudly bitch about "You will own nothing and be happy" and yet parrot that for corporations with this topic.

it's funny how common I see this argument as well, but it's funnier how you can easily you can disarm it with a single line:
MAKE A BETTER FUCKING VIDEOGAME, THEN.

Holy fuck is that volkcolopatrion retarded.

Or maybe because Publisher are more interested in mergers, IP acquisition, and cost cutting over employee retention?
Gamedevs are probably the most underpaid in software development.

Sorry, too hard, can't be done. Would be unfair to other studios to make them work so hard!
This is unironically the same argument used by journos when Baldur's Gate 3 released, it was "too good".
It's like when Auntie gets you an expensive birthday present that pisses your parents off so they have to tell you 100 times 'you better thank your Aunt because you are NOT getting any more gifts like this!!' lmfao

I think this is the real issue most of the anti-initiative people have in understanding it; they may not believe the industry on everything but they do believe that these games MUST require support, and devs can't provide it forever. It's just an unfortunate reality!

You have to have a certain familiarity with the medium and a level of critical thinking to make the realisation that the current business practice is not "support the game as long as we can then move on," it's just flat out planned obsolescence. They stopped providing customers with the tools to support their own software like they used to and forced them to connect to company servers because it's beneficial for their business model to keep control over when you have to stop playing so they can sell you the next game. Some people are so used to planned obsolescence that government regulations imposing basic functionality like doesn't make any sense to them.

I'm convinced at this point it is some indian marketing firm hired by the lobbyists. The arguments always miss the point and try to misrepresent what the initiative is, it's always the same lies based on things people generally agree on (indie good, communism bad).

Edit: Also notice how the contrarianism spiked once we crossed the 1m mark. Some was always bound to be there, but it was minimal. Now you can easily see it in many places and always using the same half-truths.

Well yeah, that's c-suite's job. Game Devs are underpaid because we are at the ass-end of the game dev gold rush, so now there are too many of them and not enough roles to fill.

Now if we're going to talk about contracting 3rd party studios in Singapore or India, or H1B workers, that's a different story. That's more than just shrewd, cold business- that's treason. And because the third-worlders drive down the salaries, the only western people that DO get hired are bottom-barrel swill. Sad state of affairs.
