Hell, lily says dubs are better but sailor moon incesetd its lesbian couple out of existence in the English dub, tf?

and this sentiment stays true for video games too. videogames are arguably even worse when it comes to translating/ localizing them and all the finicky workaround translation teams have to do. Hell, Birdo was almost always a trans character since her inception in Mario but was misgendered in the most recent Mario tennis game somewhere in Europe.

Dubs are not only censored in some english remakes but they're also dumbed down significantly for 'western' (American) audiences. I think the best example I could give would be Wolf Children and how in the subbed version of the movie the opening 15ish minutes is mostly silent save for background noise, key dialogue moments, and music. However in the english dubbed version the first 15ish minutes has a voice speaking over all of it telling the audience exactly what is happening on screen as if they can't put it together themselves. It can get kind of insulting since they either think western audiences are really stupid as to need everything spelled out for them or they just genuinely think that's how American culture is since that's how normal American television/movie making works. I'm sure there's other examples of this happening and Lily would be the idiot to say that dumbing it down for western audiences is smart or something but I disagree, I just think it's distracting and takes away from the original art.

That's also not to mention that dubbing has more to do with fitting lines into the pre-made animation rather than just translating. Just like when a production is made in America, the animation/lip movements of the characters are drawn after the initial voice acting is done. So the script is what decides the animation/lip flaps of the characters looks like. Where as, in dubbing, the anime is already completed and the actors simply have to speak over the already made animation to make it look like the characters were always supposed to speak in that language, ON TOP of also having to translate it into english to make sure it still fits the original script and what it was trying to convey. That's where some anime dubs fall flat, like in Dragon Maid the change to the 'I love you' script was probably done to actually match the lip movements of the character rather than accurately translating exactly what Tohru meant in the scene.

Ghost stories gets around these lip movements and you can tell if you watch it since the actors will often just say things when the characters either have their backs facing to the camera or are off screen entirely. Which leads it to being a funnier dub since they were never given a script to translate in the first place and were pretty much just told to go wild, and so they did, taking every chance they had to do so.

Clearly Lily has no clue what actually goes into dubbing a series since she said there's no difference when even looking into it slightly would tell you that there is, even if it's a tiny one. American english and japanese are not the same languages. They do not have the same tone, the same canter, the same translations, the same rules, etc. Even in manga there are some japanese phrases that simply cannot be properly translated into english without having to explain them, so that's why studios and translators will often opt to just change the script entirely. She can say whatever stupid shit about how 'they're the exact same' but she's literally, provably, wrong.

The Promised Neverland in particular had an abysmal dub, acting-wise, and I'm sure there are plenty more where the dub falls short of the original voice actors' skill. I saw the Sub first and when i decided to watch the sub (just to compare) i stopped because the first 10 mins i saw were ruined. Yeah i forgot to bring up the point that a lot of english dubbed anime (weeeell media in general come to think of it) is dumbed down because they think kids are stupid. Every other country is fine with nuance but apparently, English speaking kids are thick as bricks.


Maybe this explains why lily needs everything spelt out to her word by word, nuance is lost on some english speaking crowds because media dumbs down shit lmao
