What Lily refuses to understand about the voice acting was that A Realm Reborn was the FF14 team’s FINAL CHANCE at doing something decent with the concept after 1.0 crashed and burned; and thus they weren’t given a giant budget for every character being voiced. Granted 1.0 also lacked voice acting a chunk of the time, and voice acting isn’t a necessity in every scene in an MMO (something you’d think Lily would know by now considering she plays WoW).

Look, it is kinda annoying to have to go to the tavern owner when you start a character in FFXIV, but the game does want you to familiarize yourself with the city to an extent so you don’t get lost or, god forbid, softlock yourself because you can’t return somehow. Back in WotLK, I softlocked myself out of a great deal of levelling as a Night Elf druid because I joined my friends in the Eastern Kingdoms; and because I was very low level, it was quite difficult to find new quests to get myself back on track for proper levelling. While FFXIV forces you on a path, it’s also a pretty optimized path for smooth leveling, especially with the updates to XP.

But she’s also blatantly wrong about when you’re actually able to start your first combat. You are freed to try out your class after the first tutorial quest and then allowed to try it out when you reach your class quest givers. Or you can neglect to do so and go out into La Noesca. It’s even easier for Ul’dahn classes like Gladiator, Thaumaturge and Pugilist, since the way into Thanalan is basically out the way you entered the Quicksand.

also oh boy “lalafell are toddlers” red flag. Also oh boy the narc joke, combined with a filthy night elf racism joke (which is rich not only because the method of the joke implies hate crime but also because Lily utilizes her standard “it’s fine when I do it” attitude).

And then of course unfunny jokes about gear progression and quests not giving armor (even though quests actually tell you your rewards in the description but then again what’s paying attention am I right).

Also the perspective that “even the fanbase is tired of people saying ‘it gets better’ so even they know it’s bullshit” is inherently flawed because the reason the fanbase says that isn’t to admit FFXIV is bad, it’s to try and get people to understand there is something worth it already.

I know I’m coming off as a FFXIV simp with my whinging about Lily’s failed attempt at a shitpost but for fuck’s sake her forced contrarianism is just… eugh.

This brings me back to when Lily said that the best and most famous content creators get popular based on who they are (on camera), rather than the content they cover or the points they make. She’s right in the worst way possible, because she thinks “your audience is here to see you” applies to her in the same way it applies to people like Dunkey or Markiplier and it doesn’t. Instead of starting and facilitating conversations, or being a pleasant, charismatic person, she needs to shut down anything she doesn’t like while also being unnecessarily harsh. There's no reason to ever come to Lily for animation discussion, it's either all good or all bad. There are no shades of grey, no decent or merely OK shows - everything is either 10/10 or the worst thing ever. We all know this is self-serving and selective. Lily can't be an abuser because according to her she was the victim of abuse as a child (defined as -- cannot stress this enough -- being forced to do homework and get her hair cut), therefore she is absolved of every shitty thing she's ever done because she's a victim. Meanwhile somebody she doesn't like was abused in some way? Not an excuse, go fuck yourself and die in a ditch.

Lily reserves the right to not only redefine terms, but also decide what trauma 'counts'. While you can see this in the way she treats real people (especially in the way she mocks trauma that she can't understand, or wishes terrible things on people she doesn't like), her writing and plotting in her works present her worldview in an even more naked light. She planned for the climax of Tales of the Val'kyr to involve Jehovah attacking the capital city and being destroyed by Mags, but before that, Jehovah was going to try to reveal that he actually had a pretty brutal, broken past that made him do the awful things he did-- which Mags would cut off because Lily was trying to 'subvert expectations' by building up a sympathetic villain but making it clear that the heroes think it's irrelevant.

That's a bit to unpack there already but that's the main thing there-- despite having a sympathetic, traumatic past, implying that Jehovah was himself the victim of some kind of cosmic abuse from an even greater power, HE doesn't get to be a victim because he did bad things to Lily's characters. Meanwhile Lily's characters get to provoke and then subsequently destroy the Earth but it's okay because Lord Ryder was a victim of abuse so he's justified in killing billions of innocent people.

Almost like it's an arbitrary excuse.

It does make sense now because on that video Liliana explained generational trauma by using as example a father beating their child and that child growing up to beat theirs. I always thought that example was so mindnumblingly stupid and a little bit whitewashy because it took out any cultural element out of the equation, making it seem like people who got spanked as kids for speaking back have it just as bad as people who survived the Holocaust. Generational trauma is usually understood as something that a whole community of people go through and the repercusions are felt even years after it happened. We have studies reporting on Jewish people carrying with different mental illness product of this trauma they didn't even live on their generation.

It didn't click for me until now that she confuses the definition of cycle of abuse (which is exactly what happens when someone beats their kids because they were beaten as kid) with generational trauma, because on her white pale pasty life Liliana can't imagine any kind of trauma that isn't brought down by a single and specific person beating someone down. Things like racism or antisemitism can be reduced to someone hurting someone else rather than surviving a literal genocide.
