They scanned these files to pdf from microfilm copies just recently. The microfilm has been moldering in a CIA basement since the 70s. The most recent set of microfilm technicians set up a microfilm feeder over a scanner, popped the film in, and pushed go. The machine did the rest.

Nobody read the files when they were originally microfilmed, because they filmed them on a rotary camera back in the 60s or 70s, and nobody read them when they were scanned into pdfs just recently either. The camera operator set up a database with just the file numbers, roll number, and page number, and in the rare event somebody needed to know something, the database would tell them what roll number and what page they needed to look at based on the file number. There was no other information. That way, the camera operator didn't learn any of the secret information in the files. None of the client's other employees could snoop in files that they didn't need to know about either.

If they'd have bothered to make actual sensible file names and title the documents once they were scanned to pdf, we'd still be waiting for the release 6 months from now. It would be a huge amount of work and would be very costly. This was the cheap, quick, and dirty way to get the job done with a minimum of fuss.

Back in the 90s, our microfilm shop got a job from a defense contractor who was working on some sort of secret project. What the client did to obfuscate the data from the camera operator (me), was they mixed up ALL of the paperwork, from the secretary's office supply order to the diagrams of the smallest screw to the biggest secret parts of the project, like they were tossing a big salad. Then I would go through the finished microfilm page by page and put the file number and maybe a purchase order number into the database if the document had one. Later, the client could search this whole combined database from the entire microfilm project and piece the files back together again if they ever needed to. Meanwhile, I learned absolutely nothing about what they were working on, or why.

There were only two people in the factory who were allowed to look at this job, my boss and me. Sometimes the client would accidentally include video tapes, tools, and desk detritus in the boxes. I took a microfilm picture of the videotapes, then a Polaroid that I gave to the boss along with the tape. My boss would send the Polaroids over to the client and keep the video tapes in a big safe until the client told us if they wanted the video tape back or not. 99% of the time they didn't want them back, so we took them out in the alley, hit them with a sledge hammer, and shredded the film. We had a large collection of coffee cups that were left in boxes, and I scored a really nice fountain pen and a box of nibs from it. Tons of regular ballpoint pens, erasers, rulers, protractors, safety pins, stale packs of gum, dried-out tubs of pink finger moistener, all kind of stuff was in there. One box had a whole stack of delivery menus in it from the 1980s. I filmed them, under the file number on the box. I also got a girlie calendar from 1977. I filmed every page of that too. That was pretty neat.

After everything was filmed, the film and database was delivered, and we got a signed order, we shredded everything. The client sent a big truck to pick up the shreds. Then they sent another truck full of boxes of files and random crap, and the process started all over again.

James Jesus Angleton was one of the most fascinating characters in the 20th-century intelligence community. The gaunt intellectual was the famed CIA spy-catcher whose apparent closest friend, Kim Philby, the famed British double agent, duped him. Angleton’s brief was primarily the Soviet Union’s to implant assets in the United States, but curiously, he also had sole responsibility for the Israel file. He had such close relationships with Israeli intel that he is memorialized in Jerusalem with the “Jim Angleton Corner“ observation post.

Last week’s JFK files release included a short document that the “I’m not antisemitic; I’m just asking questions” crowd has latched onto. In this 1965 doc, the FBI describes a decade-long arrangement (since 1954) that encodes any information received from Angleton’s Israeli contacts, specifically regarding the travels of US citizens to Russia via Israel.
The antisemites of today are focusing on an addendum [in the square brackets] that had been redacted until now: “CIA Directors permitted Angleton to run several intelligence projects, many of them with [the Israeli Intelligence Service].” Per conspiracy theory math, because the JFK files included this file—which seems to have no connection to the assassination—and because the Israel part was purposefully redacted for decades, therefore Israel is culpable in a plot against the president.

This leads to many questions including: Was JFK killed, at least in part, over Israel’s nukes? If so, is the US government’s refusal to acknowledge Israel’s nuclear weapons effectively a continuation of the assassination plot?
