Seeing someone who is 16 who has the pain and deficits of someone who has lived 50+ years of a very hard life is awful. This is especially true because 90% of the time you can't do shit for them except try and make their life less terrible as they wait to die in a miserable way. There is no greater pain as a healthcare provider than seeing someone suffering that had nothing to do with their situation other than being born and there is jackshit all you can do about it.

I remember we had a 17 year old with actual real connective tissue disorder (not munchie shit) and other conditions; and she was always more kind and patient than all the people with trivial complaints
This has just reminded me she's either dead or wishes she was now because this was a decade ago

Mitochondrial disease can range though. I have a relative who has it, confirmed through DNA testing and all. The symptoms showed up in middle age and mainly consisted of droopy eyelids and difficulty moving eyes back and forth for the first solid 20 years of the problem.
