Extremely this. I’m a feminist, and I don’t agree with a lot of opinions posted here, but I’m still here because I’m tired of everywhere else becoming echo chambers itching to cast out members for the slightest hint of wrong-think, while simultaneously awarding can-do-no-wrong saintly status to anyone who claims the most oppression points, allowing people like Yaniv to run roughshod over the very safe spaces meant to protect from people like him.If the internet is supposed to be like physical space in any way, then hanging out on Kiwi Farms is the equivalent of hanging out at a rude, "anything goes" comedy club with an open mic and a lot of insult comedy, sharing a few drinks and laughs with a group of regulars and frequent newcomers.
Being in a venue like that doesn't mean you endorse the views of every comedian there. If someone starts making jokes that offend you, you don't have to leave, you could heckle, or you could get onstage and tell your own jokes about whatever offensive shit you believe, or you could just sit stonily silent through the set and wait for the next guy to talk.
Would that venue be worth unpersoning every attendee from? I can't see this kind of thing taking place over attendance of real-world events with the breadth of focal scope seen here. It's only the internet that makes people draw these weird lines in the sand.
Also, confronting opinions and phrases here that I find offensive was jarring at first, but overall I think it’s necessary for us to do so, instead of sealing ourselves off in airtight hugboxes.
And I’ve seen comments, ten times worse than any kiwi post, all OVER Youtube, and yt doesn’t seem in a hurry to delete them. So I guess all these angry offended people need to abandon their youtube accounts in protest? Nah, course not. That would be inconvenient.
