I remember seeing him talk about his ordeal with benzos, I think in an interview with his daughter, and the story was that he tried fucking everything to get off of them "normally" and nothing worked. He didn't just go straight from realizing he had a problem to doing the induced coma, it was more of a last resort after everything else failed. Obviously that's his version of events so maybe he's painting himself in a rosy light, but I think it's probably true to some extent, just because it seems eminently plausible to me that no one would just go straight to an induced coma as their first option for dealing with addiction/withdrawals.
