"Oh wow, they're actually localizing a Madou Monogatari game for WW release, maybe I should check it out..."
no PC version
"Ah well, maybe next time..."
If that shit is on Switch 1 (and it most definitely will be) just emulate that shit. Ryujinx and Yuzu can run any switch 1 game you throw at it with usually no issues as long as you have a decent enough rig

Also is the series worth getting into? I saw a vid a long while back about the PC-98 Madou Monogatari games and they seem like solid, albeit archaic first person dungeon crawlers.

I settled on grabbing the Switch version since I can pop it into my Switch 2 and hopefully smooth out any rough edges in performance. I could have also grabbed the PS5 version but my PS5 is sitting unplugged in a box somewhere and I don't really feel like digging it out for one game.

As for whether or not it's worth getting into, I dunno. I saw some gameplay footage and it looked like a reasonably fun dungeon crawler. I figured I might as well grab a copy and at least encourage IF to release more good slop instead of bad slop.

If you're into SMT, I'd also give Metaphor Re;Fantazio a try too. It's probably my favorite Atlus release in the last couple of years and the gameplay is literally FF5's Job System with SMT's Press Turns along with the day to day life sim shit introduced in Persona 3.
Yeah I just finished this one and it's probably my favourite Persona game. My computer broke so I needed a console game while I wait for parts, this series is great for when you have exactly one hundred hours to waste.
Terrible fucking title though; I didn't know it existed (or probably thought it was some chinese gacha shit) until I had a reason to look.

I saw some old KF posts of retards missing the point of the titular"metaphor" and complaining about a bunch of DEI shit that it doesn't actually contain, so I'd ignore that if anyone's interested. Basically it's that there's this "fantasy novel" which describes our world, which is a fantasy to them because they live in a somewhat grimdark fantasy setting with a lot of strife and racial tensions and shit, so our ideas of democracy and egalitarianism seem like a utopia. But as it goes on you realise it's actually about how hollow and hypocritical the real world is. It sounds cool to them, but as someone who lives there you know it's a bunch of fucking lies.
It's not preachy or anything, you just have a naive fairy companion who questions the policies of various political candidates for you to make up your own mind, and then you beat them up for being faggots.

The end does drag a bit, but every modern Persona game has that issue. It's a consequence of the sense of mystery and urgency and stuff making the first 75% so compelling I guess, and apparently they still haven't figured out how to fix that. But damn the whole social/attribute gimmick works so much better when you actually have an important goal behind it rather than just passing some stupid high school exams.

Bit late, but according to the maniacs at /v/, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is far superior to the JRPGs it took inspiration from.

They're obviously trolling (I hope), but are there JRPGs that do things better than it?

First of all,
>going to /v/ for gameplay opinions

Yeah there are a ton and Expedition 33 is not a perfect game. As I've said several times in the Expedition 33 thread and even in my post about the game in here, the game and the devs have a clear love for old JRPGs. The only reason why it's getting a lot of attention and praise for "solving JRPGs" is because there's no "icky anime aesthetic" attached to the game so normies can play it without feeling any slight tinge of shame. As silly as that sounds, that's more or less the reason for this game's success.

When it comes to issues with Exp33, I'd argue the combat (or mainly the parrying) gets old by the endgame with a lot of sidebosses and even some basic enemies requiring you to effectively parry parry parry and nothing else as every other strategy means nothing when you get 1 shot by every basic attack from them. It really kills all build variety and options when enemies are so ridiculously overtuned with both speed and damage that the only viable way to beat these bosses without it taking 5+ minutes (this can happen pretty often by the way) is to build around tanking attacks that do large amounts of damage and building as much shield as possible or to just make a 1-shot build because the parrying got old 80 hours ago (I'm not ashamed to say I did this one for some of the endgame bosses).

I'm still glad the game is doing well, it's a solid game that the devs clearly put a lot of love and care for and I'd love to see a sequel or something that deemphasizes parrying in favor for some other mechanics. There aren't a whole lot of good new games out there for various reasons. I just disagree that it "solved" JRPG combat entirely. I think these people just need to play more JRPGs.

Which is weird because half the threads on E33 on /v/ devolve into coomposting about Maelle in her swimsuit

Like it's not really any less degenerate than most JRPGs, it's just French degenerate instead of Japanese degenerate.

I put it in the same boat as Baldur's Gate 3 in having a solid core with a lot of QoL mixed in, and a variable amount of depth so both casuals and experts can enjoy tweaking the party setup. It's a fantastic game, but I felt that it didn't really manage to hit the emotional and/or gameplay resonance that the greats did. At most you have a sperging on the ending (which admittedly merits discussion rather than being a generic ending) but I just can't see myself remembering it the same as a lot of PS2 classics like Shadow Hearts 2, Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 and .hack.

It isn't helped that too much of it can be chalked to other games. Party, plot and even gameplay are extremely similar to Final Fantasy 10, only with the Khimari substitute is an actually good character. Dodging and parrying are Dark Souls inspired. If you get sick of the parrying then it makes a huge part of the game lose its appeal, and by the end you won't really experiment with the gameplay systems unless you want to challenge yourself on purpose.

There isn't anything done in E33 that wasn't done in a JRPG 20+ years ago. E33 is a great game in that it's just as good as a lot of PS2 RPGs but it's not any better than them. Games like LEgend of Dragoon and Shadow Hearts have comparable systems. Of course it's /v/ so the guy is ragebaiting, there's almost no crossover between suikoden and E33
