The problem largely lies with the ethical implications of this whole procedure. Sure, from the libertarian perspective, which I tend to lean towards, these folks should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies, so long as they find a doctor that is equally willing to perform the procedure. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, this isn't where it ends. These individuals, a majority of the time, have underlying issues that should be addressed through channels that don't consist of mutilating the genital area. By going through with this procedure, we only add fuel to the fire that is their disarray. Now, future doctors and community workers will be forced to waste time and resources on taking care of the problems that this procedure causes, which includes physical and mental trauma. And you still haven't even addressed the other underlying issues at this point.

On top of all of this, since many of these people are under some form of government subsidy, the rest of us will have to shoulder the costs of this via taxes. So that's why people are right to have an interest in what these people do with their bodies.
