Condolences for your Grandfather.Hello friends, a question, perhaps more of a storytime.
I recently attended my Grandfathers funeral, instead of it being a traditional (Hmong) funeral, they went the shorter, Christian route. Now I know God will not turn him away, but all my life I've asked to attend church, my father had refused but since the passing of my Grandmother some years ago a large majority of family now say they are Christian. Is this because they fear death and where they may go after? Much like how criminals often "Find God" while incarcerated? The family has had strong Shaman beliefs for decades, and now it's odd that it's changed.
As a Catholic I feel it's odd to see almost everyone convert, though should I really be upset if they turned to Him?
I once read an article where a guy became Catholic because he read Lord of the Rings, and it caused him to think, "Isn't there more to life than just the material world?" Brother Lawrence's (Practice of the Presence of God) spiritual journey began because he saw a dead tree on a battlefield and he saw it as a symbol of God's ability to bring life from death and to transform the human heart.
Even in the Bible, I always thought that Jesus was probably a bit amused by Nathanael following him because Jesus states he saw Nathanael under a fig tree, causing Nathanael to declare Christ the Son of God and the King of Israel. It always struck me as quite the leap, but Jesus than says that he would "see greater things than these".
I think God has a wide arsenal of ways to draw people to him, some subtle, some miraculous, and some that from an outside perspective probably seem bizarre, but may very well speak to the person's heart. Obviously, I don't know your family, but if nothing else, maybe just view it as a good first step that draws them deeper.
