it seems that when he has a specific style to ape he can keep mostly on-target regardless of human or fur, but when left to his own devices he just wanders immediately into lolwtf

It’s completely normal to be cautious when you’re trying to draw a line that reproduces a contour of the object you’re observing. Especially, if you’re a beginner in art.

I see nipples. Why do I see nipples?

Nipples? I saw actually scales in that chest

I see really bad acne.

If there ever was a textbook example of "less is more".

Less is more Ken.jpg

When I saw the preview sketch I was going to actually praise Ken because I thought he had realized the character had too much visual clutter and decided to simplify it, but NOPE! He had to put all that mess of lines back into the final design making her ugly again.

Just look how pretty the early sketch on the left looks. The hair is more well defined, clean cut and stylish, the cheek and jaw line is rounder, fuller and youthful, Even the rhombus shape on her forehead integrates better with the overall design because it is simpler and doesn't distract from the other facial features. The eyes are expressive and even the mouth works because of its shape.

The more "detailed" sketch on the right ruined all of it, the hair is a shaggy mess of lines, making it look disheveled and unkept, the cheeks are now sunken, he even exaggerates the cheekbones making the character look older. Now the rhombus is cluttered with that poorly drawn scale texture becoming the focal point of the face. The eyes lost their appeal because of the vertical slit pupils (he could have kept the circular irises to counter this unsettling effect) and the mouth's shape now looks worse because he added extra expression lines at the corners of the mouth.

What a way to ruin a good initial sketch, this looks like a before and after of the effects of meth use.

At least she still looks better than the nightmare fuel echidna/human hybrids like Lara-Su. His echidnas look like how Sonic looked in the live action movie before they fixed him. But worse.

And why'd he have to make them nude? Keep that stuff in a Patreon NSFW tier for the weirdos, Ken. It's just uncomfortable.

It is those fucking creepy googly eyes, he cannot let go of them despite the fact these look horrendous on characters with human shaped facial features and that he doesn't have a clue how to properly draw them either, case in point:

Eyelashes Ken.jpg

He doesn't even know how to keep the eyelash placement consistent on the same damn character!

This. I don't know how to properly parse the entire effect of 'furry fetish/CWC style Sonic fixation/downloading references of underage girls and still can't draw them right' present in this whole image. It's the effect of the uncanny valley with a generous side of barely disguised deviant proclivities, presented as perfectly normal. Kind of like Bakshis Cool World. But I agree with you both: the giant cartoon Sonic eyes and nose on the almost-human frame definitely takes the 'yikes' trophy.

What was wrong with the roly poly cartoon animal style that Sega already designed?

Also, I've seen my share of crappy licensed art, but I have trouble believing this guy had a toehold in official comics, rendering like this. At least buy a sharpener, Ken. Get a cheap one that breaks your pencils.

case in point:

You had to zoom in on it. :O
