🎨 Artcow Ken Penders - Former Archie Sonic Comic Writer/Artist

All this new information regarding the Pender/Archie court stuff is actually fascinating, and really paints the whole situation in a new light ( a light that exposes Penders for more of his lies).

The fact that it looks like SEGA just let him win cause they didn't care is actually really important to current events. If that is true and Penders is just fooling himself into thinking that he "Won a major legal battle", it really emphasizes what a bad idea it is to try and sue Paramount (Assuming that's something he still wants to do).

Paramount is unlikely to just "Let Penders win" like SEGA did since he'd be actively attacking a highly profitable movie franchise that Paramount has big plans for. They will hit Penders with a legal battle that Penders clearly isn't ready for.
I just hope it means the IdW team can go full autismo and cram all the characters in (like Katella or Bartelby). With the newfound wisdom and humility the restriction brought them. However…

Dimitri was interesting, a cyborg robot head in a floating glass bubble, never knew what his deal was other than he was super old.
He was a super chaos powered echidna eho got his powers taken from him and his age caught up to him.

I think the stories have some good things in them occasionally, but it eventually just became selfserving more the more power he got over the franchise. If he doesnt have undiagnosed autism or something id be genuinely surprised.

This info dump is fascinating, the fact Ken went to such extremes through this legal frivolous bullshit and Sega essentially caved in and allowed him ownership of this characters/furry abominations since they simply had no fucks left to give, and his legal 'victory' has no value in any meaningful sense since all his contributions were retroactively retconned anyway. Obvious but I do wonder what specifically caused his art to take such a critical decrease in quality. It was never going to be anywhere near Spaziante's level of finesse, but he was somewhat passable at capturing that detailed 90s looks initially. Its just killed by his phenomenal laziness, could Sega simply not be fucked initially because he bullied them into allowing him to shill his OC's and didnt want to deal with tantrums from this manchild?

Decent enough analogy, but this is IP. Lawyers are set up to protect IP as they have no idea what it will be worth to the company in the future. Penders characters and ideas may be shit, but they are ideas that could be leveraged in the future.

It is just very weird to me that (with evidence on hand) the Archie Lawers just bailed on defending Archies/Sega IP assets.

Like a post-it note saying "Nah ah! It's my stuff!"? I do not really get how you counter exact and specific and I assume authentic evidence showing Ken HAD a contract.

My scitzo theory with evidence on hand was that Sega forced everyone just to hand over the IPs to Penders so they could sanitize the Sonic cannons to something to their linking. Ken becomes the perfect reason to do so and is just a gullible scapegoat.
Sega orders Archie to throw the case in a settlement (even though they were to win). Sega then uses the loss of some of its IP as an excuse to gut out and snuff out the DiC and Archie cannons (via the Sega 'Mandates'). Then the Japs can enjoy their stories and only their stories forevermore.
You know if your theory is true I hope it backfires greatly and the WestChads sperg freely in the wind, all the while they're drowning in 101 echidnas.

Something I've noticed about his depiction of Sonic is his eyes always have this wide angle V shape to them. Every facial feature of his face looks crowded together & unnatural, like it was pasted together with bits and pieces from a hobby store & Elmer glue. He has no skull to speak of, his ears are just behind his eye brow & right behind that is where his hair begins. His face is a flat cardboard box where the face is apparently drafted at a downward angle but the facial features are angled forward at the viewer, you can tell the majority of his face from the eyes down are aimed at the floor but they have to be facing the viewer as well. It's like a collage of different angles of different parts pasted together to form some confused whole. I don't think I've ever seen such a bizarrely terrible depiction of a character as simple as Sonic before, at least when Chris-chan draws a character it's at a single, flat perspective. In general this art is more competent, everything is how it needs to look except his face, and the coloring is pretty appealing, yet that face just ruins it all.

No kidding your editors weren't happy with you using photographs, Ken! You couldn't be arsed to draw your backgrounds half the time anyway, God knows how much company money you spent on stock photos.

Wait, the Corridor Crew did this gay Punisher logo?
No they did the Batman video some loser rando did the skull and ken saw it and swiped it.

Linkara the lightbringer himself also mentioned this and I think it’s a good one that eyes look at them are they one or just separated.

I've been pointing out throughout this thread that Ken completely lacks any understanding of how to draw the "Sonic" style of characters because he never cared to learn the official style. To me this shows that he never felt any obligation or compromise to abide by or respect the characters and the intellectual property he was hired to work on. Instead he did whatever he felt like it and used it as a vehicle to inject and test his own crappy storytelling ideas. ( I swear, the lack of QA at Archie's and the lack of scrutiny from Sega in that time period still baffles me to this day ).

The Sonic in the image looks so warped and off putting because Ken draws without any grasps of how to construct the character, there is no underlying structure. He just looks at the external features of the character and tries to replicate them by haphazardly approximating their placement. while completely ignoring the underlying framework. As you mentioned, the character looks as if build from disjointed bits and pieces because he doesn't visualize the subject he is drawing as a cohesive whole. I blame this on his apparent lack of art fundamentals such as visualizing the tridimensional volumes and shapes and how these occupy space and how each shape relates and affects each other.

OH MY GOD, I just realized what Ken's art reminds me of!

It looks just like the bad fairground art you'll find on carnie rides.

Great now that‘s more embarrassing than ken’s own art.

It's a ball with a visor for eyes & hair. It's essentially just a motorcycle helmet with pointy ears & a wig.

Sonic isn’t that hard to draw. His head comprises of like curves and circles.

And yet he can't seem to figure it out. It is not just about drawing these simple shapes right, it is how to draw those shapes in relation to one another as a whole to create and aesthetically pleasing character design. He can only draw unpleasant Eldritch horrors.

Those hands just make me think of that one sort of famous Alan Moore Superman story where Robin can somehow wear Mongul's gloves.
